well, let's wait for the OP to confirm it. It sounds like you could be right though :D

    Damned by faint praise, indeed.

If the OP could provide make and model of both the TV and audio system, please?

No, AIUI the OP is trying to connect the digital output of their TV to an analogue input on an amplifier. So they'd need a digital to analogue converter of some sort, I guess something like:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Optical-Coaxial-Toslink-Converter/dp/B0074JZ8ZW/

Note that the converter linked to in post #3 was analogue to digital, so the wrong way round.

I've no experience with these devices though, so couldn't say whether there are likely to be any lip-syncing issues.

Yes, thanks you are quite correct. The tv i have has only a digital audio output, so i think a 'toslink' cable is needed with one of these convertors, though having a quick read of the reviews this convertor doesn't seem that reliable. Think i need to research more on the convertors to see if it's worth a try.

    Thanks all

Fair play! You were right, and I was wrong! :d more than happy to put my hand up! At least the OP got the help she wanted and thats the main thing.:d

Clive, you really are spouting a load of nonsense here.

A digital interconnect will be of no use to the OP as they only have analogue inputs on the stereo system.

You at first encouraged the OP to connect an analogue output from the TV to the analogue inputs on the stereo - but the OP clearly states there's only a digital output.

The OP needs a DAC to take the digital output and convert it to analogue to feed to the stereo.

Your blathering about video being digital, and audio being analogue, is irrelevant. The format of the broadcast system has no bearing on what appears at video and audio outputs from the TV.
I really must have serious words with that finishing school of yours. A refund i think :)
