Also we have old treacle tins - one for pencils, one for crayons and one full of felt tips so they can access those easily at any time.0

I grew up with the "put one thing away before you get another out" rule - worked relatively OK (until you factor things like lego into the equation).
Glitter - getting a big cheap tray helps with that immensely - means you get more of it back into the pot as well than faffing on doing it over newspaper as well.
You could take a tip from schools - take a photo of the area when it's tidy and tell her you want it to look the same when she's done - or photos of things in the correct container for her to reproduce when she's tidied up.
As for the little scraps of paper - I always found that if I asked the average 5 year old (works better with the really lively boys though) to be the human hoover and pick up all the little bits - they'd have a whale of a time being able to legitimately dive all over the floor picking every single microscopic bit of paper up (sound effects optional)!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0
