Rent book types ... what is best?

I believe I read somewhere there are different types/styles of rent books for different types of tenancies.
Is there a list somewhere which explains the differences between these , and where is the best place to buy? ... Amazon list some I notice for example!
I'm mainly asking on behalf of my nephew who is in a private flat but hasn't been given one yet ... I'm aware it's probably the landlords responsibility , but to save time I thought I'd sort it myself!
Thanks in advance folks!

Very few tenancies have rent books.
It is a legal requirement for a landlord to provide one where rent is paid weekly, but this applies to very few tenancies.
It does not apply to lodgers (though can be useful).
WH Smith and Office World I believe both supply basic books - there is no seperate catagorisation for different tenancy types.0 -
As long as nephew can prove he paid (eg bank transfer or cheque..) then he doesn't need a rent-book - it's the landlord who is in trouble without one if it's weekly rent.
However if Landlord insists on cash payments assume LL is on the fiddle (tax, etc etc etc...) and start worrying...
Has nephew read this VERY long thread - a guide to renting??

Thanks for the advice so far , another point has just occurred to me though?
He will probably need to apply for housing/Council Tax benefit shortly and I believe the Council need to see a rent book of some sort as proof of how much he is paying.
He does work 3 nights a week but it's only classed as part-time I think ... 24 hours total , so he might get some help with his rent I think.0 -
His rental contract should have the rent amount and payment periods on it, and the council should accept that as proof. Mine did. I don't have a rent book as I transfer the money via the bank so the landlord and I both have written records of the transactions.Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.0

Own rental property? Sharing with others?
If you explain the set-up we can advise better....0 -
It's a self-contained one bedroom flat above a restaurant which is a family run business , they are the landlords and live elsewhere .. no relation!
Medway council is the local authority , I just like to make sure everything is nicely sorted in 'black and white' to avoid any worries down the line , being over-cautious maybe?
Found these on ebay which look OK ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RENT-BOOK-tenants-copy-rent-payments-landlord-/380168346329?_trksid=p2045573.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D5126071151431035435%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D4%26sd%3D111004887578%260 -

Does the tenancy agreement show a weekly or monthly rent?
If not weekly, forget the book. Don't really understand why you are so hung up on a rent book.
How does he pay?
*Cash? To who? Receipt?
* cheque? likewise.
* bank transfer? Standing Order?0 -
I've not seen his tenancy agreement , but I know he has one somewhere (his mums probably got it!). He pays by cash every month directly to a member of the family , no receipts as far as I know.
Perhaps I'm being a bit old fashioned about the idea of a rent book ..0 -

... ..
Aarrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!
Next time cheque or, preferably, bank standing order.. If they insist of cash worry.
Currently landlord can simply say "nah, no rent paid" -- and nephew has no evidence....
Rent books not required for monthly rent...0 -
Yes rent book irrelevant. Old fashioned.
Receipts NOT!0
