Buying Prepaid Card as a honeymoon gift

Step daughter is getting married in September and is going on honeymoon to USA and Hawaii.

We would like to give them a $1000 spending money for the trip and we would prefer to give it to them as a surprise gift at the wedding.

Is it possible to buy a prepaid card and load it in the name of someone else ?

I wouldn't. If they have trouble using it in Hawaii they're stuffed. Can you not just give them $?

Not happy at giving them so much cash to carry around.

What we might have to do in the end is get them to apply for the card and we will load it up. Just spoils the surprise a bit.

For all practical purposes, I don't see any problem with applying for the card in your name, and giving them the PIN. Nobody needs to know (assuming they only use it for ATMs).

It might become a problem if it is lost or stolen though.

A search for 'prepaid visa gift card' brings up a lot of results. So there are 'official' options to give them a card. I doubt they will be as cheap as the Caxton card, though I haven't looked.

Alternatively, if they have a credit card, you could just prepay their credit card bill to the tune of $1000. Most CC companies allow this (albeit you have the same problem with the exchange rate - their credit card isn't necessarily a good deal for overseas spending).
  • You could get a prepaid card in your name and add them as an additional cardholder.
  • For the purposes you want it for, Travelex Cash Passport is a good card. They allow additional card holders for no extra fee. Choose the USD card and also make sure you opt out of DCC because that can sometimes result in a "roundtrip back" type currency conversion and actually cost you more than the transaction amount. Or at least thats what I was told by travellex.

Search for the travellex cash passport website (I can't post links)

Thanks. Decided to do that option. I contacted Caxton who said that was ok
  • Hi,

I used a Thomas Cook Cash Passport when i went to the Philippines, it says it works anywhere with a 'Mastercard' logo, but it actually worked on a lot more cash machines.
If you go to their website, you can search on the ATM locator to make absolutely sure there are ATMs nearby they can use.
I used mine for 3 months and never had any problems with it, in fact when I go to work in Greece in April I am going to use it again as its much cheaper than a debit card and better than carrying round wads of cash :)

Can't you just transfer the equivalent in £ into their bank account?

Anyway if you do get a card they will only need to sign rather than use a pin, unless using an ATM of course. Oh and show photo Id they ask for that quite a lot in Hawaii.

That's the best plan. By the time they get your surprise gift they might have already bought their dollars
