The Giving Up/ Cutting Down alcohol support thread - number 12

Thanks for the welcome folks.
Maman the plan is to hopefully give up completely, I've tried cutting down a few times and I can't control it.
However this seems very daunting (I'm terrified to be honest) so I am allowing myself to believe I can drink when I go on holiday next September. Then at least it feels like I have a goal rather than an endless tunnel. How realistic that is remains to be seen, a deeper part of my brain hopes by september I won't want a drink so much.
My target will be to take one night at a time to start with. I think anything else would be unrealistic, I have to learn to walk before I start talking about running.
Once again thanks for the welcome.0 -

Thats exactly the right attitude to take new year !
Hopefully after a while , you will get so used to NOT having the booze , that you wont miss it.
Good luck you and you should be proud of yourself for realising that something needs to be done !.0 -

You sound very realistic and I applaud you for taking on the challenge.:T
Just wondering whether you need to chat with your GP. I'm no expert but going 'cold turkey' might be difficult healthwise.0 -
Welcome NYNS and well done to all those AF days everyone!
NYNS, giving up completely would probably be too much as it starts to feel like deprivation to go without forever, rather than the positive step it should be for your health and wealth.
I started by giving up for a month, then I went to two months.
Friday was to be my first night drinking in two months and I genuinely felt that I could take or leave the drink. Eventually I started drinking at 10pm and had two small glasses of wine. It didnt taste as good as I remembered and the next day I felt hungover all day. So I didn't drink last night which was my second planned night of drinking.
Anyhow now on 14/25 AF days thanks Shaggy.0 -
11 please, Shaggy, thanks
Have a great week, everybody x0 -

Wow I go for a week and so much happens! Lots of high numbers appearing!
Well done Green Karen! Hope you enjoyed your time away!
After 7 nights of drinking on holiday I was delighted to come back and immediately get straight back onto abstaining so that is now 4 AF for the month so far.
Despite feeling quite "proud" of my alcohol success in the last 3 months, all my boozy antics came back my first night with a vengeance.
Went out doing the Apres Ski drinking then had a civilised drink with dinner with Other Half. At this point I still managed to interspace an alcoholic drink with a soft drink. At some point <and I know it was me that suggested it> we decided to stop off in a bar for a night cap on the way home. We had a few schnapps (potent) then paid but whilst OH went to toilet I ordered some wine for us both. More Schnapps then was consumed and the night ended up in a massive blur with no idea how we got home with OH losing his I-phone 5, lost snowboots, broken prescription sunglasses, visit from Swiss Police at the plush apartment block we'd rented a ski apartment at and a lost ski-ing day as we were both too hungover to function AND THEN had to spend all day sorting out iphone! Plus we have gained a stuffed 2 inch santa from somewhere (obviously taken from somewhere we just don't know where but presumably taken nonetheless!).
Obviously we didn't have anymore nights like that but nonetheless we still managed to drink booze everyday and participate in Apres ski fully. It is the age old problem of no "Off" switch!
I think I have made some progress as my usual pattern would be to carry on drinking when I get home to elongate the holiday spirit and I haven't done that! :rotfl:
I am "on call" tonight so I know I shall have no further booze so am calling super early but 5 AF including tonight!
Hope you are all well and "dry"

Good to have you back stu and well done on jumping back on the wagon. I recognise your holiday escapades only too well.:o
I'm feeling decidedly off colour this morning. Not exactly hungover but hardly my sparkling best;) and I know wine is too blame. Hopefully, I'll remember this next time I have a drinking night. Definitely AF tonight.
:Ton an AF weekend Shaggy, that's excellent.0 -

Hi NYNS - nice to 'meet' you.
Wishing you lots of luck with your goal of giving up - I almost wish I could to after last night  but I do not have the willpower to do it.

Sounds like we had the same sort of day yesterday Maman - I feel exactly the same - not actually hungover but decidedly 'worse-for-wear'.
I will definitely be AF tonight too and it is my intention to stay that way until Friday evening.
Have a good Monday everyone0
