New Conservatory - Cost & Heating

I rarely open the windows in my conservatory due to wasps and flies. I'd rather be hot than chase them around all day. Someone mentioned the spiders, they are a god send when you do get the odd fly in when you open the door.0

My wife does a wobbly up the ladders trying to clean the mess that they leave behind when we first moved in we shared the Conservatory with hundreds of them. But they are good with flies etc.
We have net curtains fitted over the windows so when they are open only the odd fly come in also we have net curtains covering the twin-doors because we need these open to get air movement within the Conservatory, also the net curtains have weights on the bottom to stop them swinging all over the place.:)0 -
Very true.
To the OP, we had the aircon unit built into one of the drawf walls by the conservatory company (below is not what we had but shows the type). But I believe spilt units like those found in offices are supposed to be better i.e. quieter
I am very interested in the pictured unit, what make is it please? What do I search for?
Something similar would be a great idea, I am currently speccing a conservatory.0 -

Here is a starter link for you to get some ideas on the Air-con units..

Try Googling and you will find quite a lot of British Companies that supply.

Not flagged up by anyone else - unless I missed it so apologies if so.
I plan on heating my sun room with a small radiator plus electric oil filled radiators. The electric because 4kw plus (just!) is generated from solar pv and I need to find a use for this. In effect this is free heating, provided light levels are OK. The downside being no daylight at night. Hence the radiator!0 -
We have a south facing sun room (solid roof, waist height walls and rest is glass. It gets hot enough in the summer, I can't imagine it with a glass roof.
In the winter the low sun really warms up the room, its the warmest room in the house without the heating on. Its a real treat.
It was built before we bought the house. Its off the dining room. Dining room feels nice and bright when you enter it from the kitchen, but its like a cave when you go back after being in the bright conservatory. I think thats going to happen no matter what you do.
I'd look at getting the dining room and conservatory roofed at the same time, and putting in some more natural light into the dining room.0 -

A mistake I made, perhaps though still not sure, was not putting enough Velux roof windows into the traditional roof on my sun room. With the sizes available, and if set side by side, they can look fantastic
If one has small tiles or flat tiles and a cut roof then fine. If it is big concrete tiles, and truss rafters, then the cut tiles, Velux permutations and setting out are an issue. Basically, because such roofs are so small.
So maximum Velux really requires very careful thought.0 -

One of the reasons I'm thinking air to air heat pump is that I have solar PV. It means that in the summer if it gets hot the PV will be working well and we can use the electric generated from that to cool the conservatory with the air heat pump.
We visited a neighbours conservatory yesterday which is similar in design to what we are considering. This had pilkington K activ glass, A rated windows etc. I have to say on a cold day they had put on an electric radiator for just a short while and it was lovely and warm in there. We really liked it. In terms of cleaning the roof hadn't been cleaned in 3 years and was still very clear and he had only had to clean the UPVC once so that sounds good as well.0 -
Just an observation but 2 nice pubs near us both had dining room extensions built on at around the same time. They were both standard conservatory construction, ie, much glass and plastic roof.
Within a year 1 had had the roof completely replaced with something opaque, and the other had dark plastic panels fitted.
I guess it was like trying to eat in a sauna during the summer.
OP has free energy from solar panels?, opens a few cheap possibilites there then. :T:TI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

I am suggesting the cleaning depends on the orientation. If south/south west facing the rain will wash it and the sun burn off moss and algae.0
