Hi,
on Plusnet essentials, 10GB monthly allowance, but downloading midnight till 8am doesn't count.0 -

No I'd given up for the month until last night when a pop up appeared to tell me something was downloading. When I checked iplayer desktop it was a programme I'd left on series link. It had paused automatically so I thought great, I'll leave it ready to go, presumed it had but when I went online this morning it must have decided to do it then.iPlayer is pretty much already idiot proof.
When you click on manual download, it will download straight away as you have found out.
And record at certain times is for series linked only, which you have to click on to activate for each program.
Just out of curiosity, why set it to record after midnight. Generally that is normally used as when it reaches midnight most providers lift the restriction to make download faster. You will still be using your data allowance to download.
As previous posters have said I'm with Plusnet. The iplayer option for 0000 - 0559 is ideal if I can get it to work. I must beg to differ about iplayer I think I have very basic requirements of it. I've set the timer to download overnight, so it should download overnight, not the morning after, not immediately. I shouldn't have to set up task schedueler and work out how to get it on series link without it downloading.mr_fishbulb wrote: »What do you mean by "until I go online again"?
At 8 am do you have to wake the computer up? Has it gone to sleep overnight?
Well I left everything open and ready, presumed it would wake up when the download activated, I'm obviously expecting too much lol.
Thanks guys I'll get there in the end.0 -
Im watching this thread, I have the same problem, wanting to download overnight its a PITA0

Yeah posted with plusnet after i posted.
Also what you have not posted is, are these new programmes you are trying to download. As in you installed iplayer, told it download maybe 4 or 5 different programmes.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

A few days ago I set the timer then hit download several times while changing settings trying to make it recognise the timer as I thought I must have done something wrong, they all downloaded immediately. I must have left one set to series download and got a pop up last night as the next episode finished on TV. I checked the iplayer desktop, it was paused which made me think the time settings were working.
So yes I've realised now if I hit download on an available programme it will download straight away and not wait for the correct time but it didn't kick in overnight?? and started to download as soon as I went online this morning at 8 o'clock (outside the timer settings).
My dd says she had this problem on her mobile, it was eating her data allowance, she came to the conclusion the timer setting doesn't work.
It seems far from ideal.0 -

This may be the problem here. When you say went online just what exactly do you mean?
Turn on the computer using the power button?
Turn on the internet using either the router/modem switch?
or Just start browsing using a webpage?
Thing is, computers will normally go to sleep, those are the default setting and until you physically turn it back on ie press power to bring it back to life then nothing will work in that time.
So if you have to turn on the computer, it wont download during the setting, it'd prolly just download as and when you turn it back on, hence during the day time.
Forget about the series record, I never managed to get on with it, and gave up. Just set the downloads to start (add the program on bbc iplayer site) and shut it down (not minimise it) close it, and make sure it's not hiding in the taskbar. You can do this last thing at night, or leave the series record to carry on. BUT
Set up a scheduled task as I said before, and others have said, to load up the iplayer at say half past midnight. Make sure you have turned off the sleep mode/standby mode (what OS are you on for further instructions?) but dont turn off the hdd turn off, or the monitor screen turn off, then leave the computer running, and it will download for you over night.
I have been through this before and this is the only solution that I found to work.
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3806769 <-- my thread that I asked about roughly what you need to do, and the results I got were scheduled task which worked perfectly fine.0 -

NO, if you download the start of a new series, that program will always download straight away, make no difference if 00.00 - 06.59 is selected or not. That option is will only kick in when subsequent programs of that series is available to download.
That is why i asked if you tried to download 4 or 5 new programs, as that would be about right for 3gb of data.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0
