Does anyone know what ways my housing benefit can be paid?
Im in avery difficult situation, i am currently receiving housing benefit, however, my account has gone into minus figures (-£660) and i am currently bankrupt and have no way of bringing it level, therefor any future housing benefit paid into that account is going to get swallowed! U can read the full story here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/58864035#Comment_58864035
Basically just need to know how they can pay me it, apart from putting it into that account.. Money cant go to landlord because she doesnt accept housing benefit, something i didnt know but got told recently after i become jobless.. Also ive tried opening a new account but got declined! Do they not accept simple payments cards?? Or can they not send me a jiro??

You need to open a specific kind of bank account. It is called a basic bank account. It should be one not connected with any of your creditors.
If you pop into your local CAB office they should have a leaflet about basic bank accounts. Some banks also have these leaflets available.
You have probably just been asking for a new account not a basic bank account.
The person who advised you on your bankruptcy should have told you this.
You could also use a PO account if you preferred.
if you can't find out which bank to use for the basic account then ask on the bankruptcy board/debtfree wannabe board.0 -
Ive got a basic account with barclays thats the one thats in minus figures, and the only basic account u can have is with barclays now and the wont let me open another one because of that :-(0

Natwest? Co-op? Why is your basic bank account overdrawn by so much? Basic bank accounts do not have overdrafts and any requests that will take you into overdraft will not be paid. Open a savings account with Barclays...with an opening balance of £1 and get your housing benefit paid into that account...then go into branch to withdraw the money.swaterhouse wrote: »Ive got a basic account with barclays thats the one thats in minus figures, and the only basic account u can have is with barclays now and the wont let me open another one because of that :-(:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Try the post office for a new bank account.

In certain cases Housing can still be paid direct to the Landlord.
You need to speak to you someone in your local housing benefit office. Take all relevant paper work with you.
These cases are usually tenants in arrears. But explain that by paying you, they will letting you get in arrears, and you do not want this to happen.0 -

I do not think that you have a basic bank account as they do not allows overdrafts (as previously stated)
Do not confuse them with ordinary accounts. They are special accounts and do not require the normal credit checks.
To save a lot of hassle just open a post office account and get any money paid into this.
Getting your HB paid direct to the landlord is a good idea but you also need an account for any other income so that it does not get swallowed up by your overdraft.0 -
Yes but my landlord doesnt accept housing benefit, therefor she wont accept it. Can they write cheques in my name? And can i cash them somewhere then give the cash to landlord0

According to this
http://www.dwp.gov.uk/publications/specialist-guides/technical-guidance/rr2-a-guide-to-housing-benefit/how-your-benefit-is-paid/
there are different ways that your housing benefit can be paid so you need to phone/call in at your local council and ask them.0 -

You need to address this and have a chat with your LL.
It maybe that her insurance is invalid or her BTL mortage is preventing her from accepting you.
sorry, but it maybe time to look for somewhere else to live.

Don't bother opening a post office account as HB cannot be paid into these accounts.
Not sure what type of account you have, but you can read martins main page on basic bank accounts here.
If you can't open a basic bank account (they tend to not display information about basic bank account in the branch, they're not profitable so they tend to hide them out of the way), the next best step is to go to your local Credit Union and open an account with them.I work as a Housing Benefit assessor, any advice given is for general information purposes only. It is not, and should not be construed as, financial or other professional advice.0
