Using up hot chocolate powder?

Options
Hoping someone can help... I have a load of hot chocolate powder (out of date!) which I'd like to use up rather than throwing out. I can't stand hot chocolate to drink (let's not get into why I have this stuff when I don't like it :rotfl: ).

I like to bake sometimes & have a yen for chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream... I would usually use cocoa, but could I use some of the hot chocolate powder instead? If the result is oversweet I'm unlikely to mind :o . Failing that, is there anything else you can think of to do with it?

(incidentally, when did cocoa powder get so expensive?? )

  • Personally I would throw it away.. I once had a hot chocolate using powder that was out of date and it made me very very sick!

Hot chocolate is only made for drinking. It is no substitute for cocoa powder,

The only thing it will do for your baking is ruin it. It has no chocolate taste at all in cakes, it will just turn it an awful beige colour.

    Chuck it in the bin,

*Note, all the recipes in the link have no reviews so I wouldnt waste your time and money.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I've previously made chocolate mug cake with hot choc powder. You can find the recipe online

Also, in the summer I mash up some bananas, add some hot choc powder and make it into ice lollies - really delicious! :)

Have to agree with McKneff, don't waste good butter and eggs trying to bake a cake with it. Unless you can find a recipe that doesn't require anything other than flour and a bit of milk and sugar, bin it and cut your losses.

It does work as a nice snack stirred into some 0% Greek yoghurt (with or without some sliced banana) No idea about safety aspects of it being out of date though. Might depend on how far out of date. I don't like having tummy trouble so I tend to be quite conservative about these things

Like Blackicerose, I have used it with bananas to make choc ice lollies. Not great, but the kids ate them.
Def don't use it to bake with. Been there, done that and the others are right, you would waste the other ingredients.
I've also used it with frozen bananas and milk to whizz up for a choc banana milkshake.
As for cocoa powder, the cheapest is the reduced fat, basics one from Tesco. Not much cheaper than Asda, def cheaper than Sains.
    250g £2.28 in Asda.
250g £1.29 in Tesco (reduced fat everyday value). I don't notice much difference when I bake with it, or make hot cocoa with it.

I make a low fat ~"mousse" type thing - 100g quark, 400g fromage frais and some choc drinking chocolate.

ive used it mixed with icing sugar to make chocolate icing and buttercream - not as nice (to my mind), as real cocoa but quite acceptable.
  • Check the taste before you bake anything. The milk/veg fat in these things can still go rancid when sealed.
