I know I should know better but took advantage of halfords half price MOT £27.42

I prechecked the car first and changed a tyre and a couple of bulbs

Well they failed it on tyre fitted wrong way round ( they fitted it at last years MOT - muppets) and near side rear mechanical brake component has restricted free movement

He struggled to even explain to me what they meant by this but kindly offered to take a look and give me a good price:rotfl:

I just not sure i believe them or indeed trust them with my brakes when they cannot even fit a tyre correctly !

I requested they just fail the car and rectify the incorrectly fitted tyre free of charge

Just booked it into the local council MOT place next week. What's the bet it passes first time

I'll report back and if there is an issue found with my brakes I will put the record straight

Maybe you could get them to rectify the other problem as a gesture of goodwill seeing that they had you driving around in a car where one tyres performance in the wet would have been significantly reduced.
  • You have to be carefull what you write on a Internet forum so

In halfords opinion my car was unroadworthy, but they would happily take a look and give me a good price

In the local authority's opinion my car was roadworthy and issued a MOT certificate without hesitation

In my opinion !?!?!?!?!?!?!?........ Lets just say I would not step foot in a Halfords Autocentre again .

Make your own mind up. Thanks to :money: for the great advice

I've use a local Halfords autocentre for MOTs on two cars for the last couple of years and both have passed first time with no hassle. A couple of advisories which could easily have been exaggerated, especially on 7-8 year old cars. They aren't all bad.

there are directional and non directional tyres. the directional ones are very clear and will have arrows on the outside stating which direction they should go.

There are tyres that are actually bi-directional but the thread pattern makes it look like it should be directional. It doesnt matter what the thread patter looks like, as long as ti doesn't have arrows on the side pointing to the direction of rotation then it can be fit any way.

At most though should charge you a tenner to take off the tyre and put it the right way round (as long as it doesn't have these rim protections which requires it to be put on one way only). Or give you 10 days to rectify the problem by taking it to a tyre place and fixing it - but i suspect that a tyre place isn't going to bother with a small job like that (either charge you 20 quid or refuse to do it - best bet is to go there at a really really quiet time).

I don't suppose that since Halfords fitted the tyre, you have moved it to the other side of the car have you?

This is the only situation where the fault isn't down to error on the part of their fitter.

Also does the tyre even have a directional marking?
  • i went into halfords asking for some items for a motorbike. Wanted a wire to plug a in car charger to charge my phones sat nav on the move they said no such thing has been made for a motorbike however later that day found it on the internet also wanted a gps tracker if it got stolen they tried to sell me a sat nav:eek:

    x2 fail

will never ask there advice again

Halfords autocentre fitted the tyre then spotted the mistake a year later and refitted it correctly FOC

Anyway lesson learnt. I Just think the independent county council is the way to go for MOT inspection

I don't mind when something is black and white ie tyre tread below 1.6mm or minimum wear depth exceeded on a brake pad.

But an ambiguous failure code like mechanical brake component has restricted free movement is just too open to interpretation and subsequent abuse
  • Well I never

Fast forward 12 months and my car passed first time at the local authority MOT testing centre

Still no sign of the mechanical brake component has restricted free movement fault that Halfords diagnosed a year ago

    So there you go.

I'm not sure where Helfruads get this half price MOT malarkey from. My local garage only charges £30 for an MOT anyway and never any problems.

Either MOTs are just cheap round here, or Helfrauds are talking rollocks with their "Cut Price" MOT offer!

I've got my car booked in with Halfords a week tomorrow for a MOT.

VOSA set a maximum price for a MOT which is £54.85, so Halfords price of £27.42 is an offer based on the full price. I bet that they've never charged full price for a test, so can it be a genuine offer?
