Halfords Ambiguous MOT failure

I've got my car booked in with Halfords a week tomorrow for a MOT.

VOSA set a maximum price for a MOT which is £54.85, so Halfords price of £27.42 is an offer based on the full price. I bet that they've never charged full price for a test, so can it be a genuine offer?

Do yourself a favour and find your local authority MOT test centre

You will save a lot more than £27.42

The actual fee paid to VOSA when issuing an MOT is only £20. So if a garage is only charging £27.50, I would guess that they will be getting the whole MOT done in under 30 minutes.

I used to take my car & van to the Council workshop for it's MOT, but Colchester Borough Council sold it to RTS. S now I take if to Essex County Fire & Rescue Workshops just down the road.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

I'm hoping that there shouldn't be any need for that, I should get a test done there by the book and to the correct standard, the question is do I let them know that I'm a MOT tester before or after the test?

VOSA don't get anything for the test, the testing station does pay £2 or so to the computerisation provider for each pass that is issued.

Absolutely no idea where you get this from, but it is definately untrue.

    You aren't even close.
If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.

I don't think I've ever read a Halfords thread when they are portrayed in good light. I'd avoid them at all cost.

    Certainly afterwards!

Be interesting to see their faces (especially if they fail it on some BS that you know is not true!) :rotfl::T

Just happy to update my thread from a year ago

If they lose trade on account of it so be it

    It's a matter of principle

I don't think they'll care. How many guys here work in retail and have been told 'my husbands a lawyer so I know my rights'. You hear BS like this in all industries so it's not really something to fear anymore.

Plus, if you're an MOT tester they'd be asking why you don't take it to the place you work where they know you and less likely to rip you off!
  • How much was your MOT at local authority test centre?
  • Have to say that I have used Halfords auto centres a few times, twice for the MOT on a performance car (3rd and 4th anniversaries), and for three tyres fitted on another car. (there are few things more annoying than having a nail through a almost-new tyre that you only had fitted because you wanted it to balance with the other side that had a puncture a few months earlier).

I always felt that the price was right, and booking a slot was much easier than a main dealer. I may have been lucky though, as one of the two branches I used was pretty much brand new, so I guess they didn't want to annoy their potential audience. There was no free coffee though...
