Temporary Insurance Cover????

Hi all. My wife's Subaru is just about fit for the scrapyard, but it is gamely hanging on in there. We are intending to get it to limp through to the end of winter (4 wheel drive!) before putting it out of its misery. In the meantime I have been keeping my out for a replacement. I think I may have found somethng at a price I am willing to pay. The idea is to buy a car and then transport it to my Mum's who has a nice big, empty, garage that we can put it in and SORN it until needed. The problem comes in the transportation from buying to my Mum's garage. Insurance. I have noticed over teh last few years that insurance companies aren't as willing as they once were in issuing temporary cover notes for just such occassions as these. Is there somewhere that I can get, say, 1 weeks cover to enable me to legally get from A to B?

Cheers

How about asking the current owner of the car to deliver it to where you are going to keep it and then give them a lift home? It's worked for me in the past.

Either do the above, or try online temp cover people. You'd presumably only need it for a day to get from the owner to the garage?

Last time I did this it cost £30 for the day. Does make a difference on the car though and they won't do anything that's getting old usually (about 15 or over)

Gloomendoom, not really possible as the distance between the 2 is about 150 miles (with us somewhere in the middle).

Fivetide, I didn't realise there were online specialists in temp cover. Thanks I'll give it a Google and see what it comes up with. The vehicle I'm currently looking at is 7 years old.

www.tempcover.com or if you feel safer just going strat to a 'big brand' without worrying about cost http://www.aviva.co.uk/short-term-car-insurance/

There are a number out there though. As long as you are over 25 (i think) you should be able to get cover.

    Good luck.

When I bought my last couple of cars, I just rang up the insurer on the vehicle I was driving at the time and added the new vehicle to the policy temporarily. It cost me about £20 a week with the bonus of being able to use both vehicles at the same time. Really simple and worth a try.
  • Aviva do the 7 days free cover if you are buying through a dealer.
Talk to your own insurance company, I have had 'transportation' insurance to bring cars home or pick up my nephews motorbike on a fixed day for between free and £20 a time.
Norwich union were the best for this a few years back. They gave me 30 days cover for free to pick up my wifes new car and sell her old one for free.

Yes, RAC. Does that make a difference?

Thanks for all of your answers. Very helpful.

Disable the car somehow and call the RAC and tell them you have broken down, free recovery to your home if you have the correct cover.
