Can I pay on my credit card without a card reader?

  • If he doesn't accept credit cards, then a card that allows money transfers is the only resonably cost effective way to go. You'd pay a 3-4% fee, but hopefully get a few months at 0%, depending on the card.

  • You may be in luck. I believe there is some workaround with travellers cheques and the M&S card but I'm not sure on the details. But if you search for it on this site, you may well find out how it works. It's certainly been mentioned a few times before.

Does he have a bank account and email address?

Could use paypal and get him to accept a paypal payment - might go through as Fast Pay now so could get there same day? Anyway, he would at least see the payment confirmed on the website and in his account immediately.

Well I've got to pay on Monday so can't apply for anything new now but have an M&S credit card that I was hoping to use. Still not sure how I get it onto the card though if his proposal is a bank transfer.
Probably isn't time to use the M&S Sterling TCs mentioned above (the cheques will almost certainly need to go through 4-day clearing).

Even if there was time, unless you're still in the 0% introductory period you'll only get up to 50 days interest free. Yes you could BT the resultant debt on somewhere else, but would the cost of this exceed the savings interest you're earning in the ISA?

Ah, I thought M&S was 15 months interest free spending.
Like I said above, if you're still in the introductory 0% period things are a little different. When did you get the card?

The Sterling TCs may work, but only if:

    1. Your bank will accept them (for no/little charge), and

    2. The kitchen fitter will wait a few days for his money.

I got the card a month ago.
So talk to your bank and the kitchen fitter then.

You'll pay a 1% fee for the Sterling TCs, but what's the paypal fee (if indeed that's an option)?
