  • Hi all,

Just to let you know that we've been in touch with Sainsbury's this morning and it's confirmed that customers are under no obligation to purchase the original fish, so you can just have the free sample if you wish.

Remember though that you need to initially ask for one of the Big Five fish from the fish counter in order to be offered the freebie. See our write-up for full info.

    Thanks

Same for my local store; Boscombe in Bournemouth. Sustainable fish is free after purchasing the non sustainable portion. Won't be purchasing any because I don't want two portions of fish (we won't eat it) and I'm not buying one and then not bothering to take my free one. Will make something from the freezer instead!

As I posted in another thread:

Our fish counter of our local store had a sign and leaflets for the promotion. The sign said to try a free sample today. All I had to do was ask the woman at the counter which fish were included (in my store, it was just the sardines, mussels, and lemon sole. So I picked the lemon sole and she wrapped it up and put a free pat of flavoured butter in too. No problems and the booklet has coupons inside too!

Ah, Sainsbury's you do disappoint. The lad on the counter at my local store insisted I had to buy a portion to get one free, even when I said I'd been told the offer was not reliant on a purchase. As I walked away I thought I ought to have said I'd buy a portion and then dump it with the pre-packaged fish, but I wasn't positive you don't pay at the counter and I didn't like to think I was the cause of a wasted fish life!

Unfortunately this promotion has only succeeded in souring my perception of Sainsbury's. Tesco is cheaper anyway!

It's a big shame that they haven't informed their staff of the same thing because all the staff on fish counters in my area were very nice but stated that I had to buy a piece of fish to be given a free piece under the offer. This meant that I had to dump the fish that I didn't want in the chillers which I didn't like doing.

I found that the staff don't offer the promotion - it's down to the customer to ask for it.

Also the label on the 'free fish' is £1.50 although the till does deduct this.

I was able to go through the tills and pay nothing for my fish despite being misled at the counters and by the price label.

This was definitely not the case in my local store. I asked for salmon, I was asked if I'd like to try an alternative for free. I said yes I'd like to take the free alternative and then was told I must also purchase the salmon. I explained that "an alternative for free" is not the same as "a sustainable piece of fish for free to try when you buy the unsustainable fish"

    Not impressed with Sainsburys

Stay away from the mussels folks. We've now opened ours to cook them and two thirds are open. What's the point of Sainsburys giving us free stuff that isn't fit for consumption? Seriously unimpressed with Sainsburys.
