I don't have Whatsapp on my phone but thinking of downloading.

I'm with Virgin. Can I send someone abroad a text on whatsapp without incurring any charges? How does it work? Will that person need to have whatsapp on their phone?

It works via mobile data (internet) connection. If you use free WiFi or have a mobile data allowance you don't incur any extra charges provided that you stay within the allowance.

Can I download this on my phone from playstore and which one do I dowload. I notice there are a few including app messenger.

In summary am I also right in thinking that any message I send abroad as long as the other person has whatsapp will come out of my allocated number of texts?

No, when you use what's app, it won't affect your text message allocation. I use what's app all the time to send messages and pictures to my family in South Africa, it costs me nothing to send or receive. I have an unlimited data package so I wouldn't breach my data limit with what's app.

What's app is a brilliant way to keep in touch very very cheaply.

Agreed. Whatsapp has made text messaging virtually redundant for me, as most of the people I'm in touch with on a regular basis have Whatsapp.

As long as you are connecting by local wi-fi it won't come out of any allowance. If you are connecting by 3G then it's data and you will be charged data roaming charges.

I talk to my daughter almost daily on Whatsapp. I am in the UK and she is in South Africa. I use Wifi though so it doesnt come out of my data allowance.
