Need advice on Calor Gas heaters please

Hi, I live in a 2 bedroomed flat with storage heaters which I hate. They are so expensive to run. Anyway, im trying to find a cheaper way to heat up mainly the living room in the evening.

Could somebody advise me on the running costs for a Calor Gas Heater please. I know a cylinder is going to cost me around £30 and the heaters seem to be around the £70 mark. How eficient are they/easy to use?

Thanks:)

Easy to use, whoever delivers bottle of gas can show you how to use it if you're unsure.

Calor are the only ones that do a 15kg bottle, everyone else does a 13kg.

In Edinburgh can pay anywhere from 26 (for a 13kg) to 36 + 2.50 for delivery (for 15 from calor) so phone around local suppliers for best price. Some may charge a bottle deposit, if you do you can usually find an empty bottle to give them on gumtree or at the tip or something so you don't have to pay a deposit.

    The heaters work on 3 bars, 1 bar is 1.4kw, 2 is 2.8, 3 is 4.2.
    13.7kw per kilogram for a gas bottle so a 13kg = 178.1 kwh
    15kg = 205.5

    So a 13kg bottle on 1 bar would last 178.1/1.4 = 127.2
    ~127 hours.
    a 15kg would last ~146 hours

I normally put mine on 3 bars for an hour to warm the room up then put it on 1 bar. If I'm only one in the room then I just leave it on 1 bar and sit in front of it.
  • Supersers are hard to beat. Thinking of getting one - the butane bottles I get are 11.34kg tho, and cost £17 off thw wholesaler.

The only major problen with gas heaters is the amount of moisture vapour they produce !!
  • We have one in the bathroom, and agree they do produce moisture but we also have a dehumidifier which works very well. Before the dehumidifier we would light the calor in the kitchen and instantly the double glazing would mist up, but now if we sometimes use it in the kitchen with the dehumidifier the windows stay clear.

Anyway to answer your question my bottle costs £33 and I have worked out that costs me 23p/KW to run, whereas the electric fire cost me 13p/Kw to run, so the calor is more expensive.

As for instant heat they are great pumping out 4.2 Kw but they do give off a slight odour but thats never a problem.

There is also a deposit for the bottle if bought new, but I have seen deals for £100 that includes the bottle.

Calor Mini is a good little heater, it's small and economical but performance is more than adequate for it's size with two heat settings that pump out good amounts of heat even on one radiant. It gives 63 hours of heat on the lowest setting using a Calor Gas Butane 7kg Cylinder, and because it's CALOR brand you know it's going to be good. It's £79.99 without gas and £130.04 with gas check this out http://www.calor.co.uk/shop/product/calor-mini-heat-portable-heater-with-gas/732/ or visit a Calor Centre or a Calor Gas main dealer (smaller agents may not have this particular model) by going to www.calor.co.uk/find-a-stockist for your nearest Calor Gas Main Dealer to buy with gas.;)
