Do I need a phoneline to get internet?

I need the net but not phone or TV package or anything, can I get it on its own?
Up and onwards to the future!

    Tethered mobile (or Mifi).

Cable (e.g. Virgin, if it is available).

    Piggy-back someone's unsecured wifi. ;)

Other than that then you MUST have a phone line.

You can't get ADSL broadband without a phone line.

You can get Virginmedia (Cable) Broadband without a phone line.

You can get an internet dongle withouit a phone line.

    Anyone for satellite broadband?
    No, I thought not.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Wireless is good, if available.

Father in Law lives in the sticks and just took up VFast Broadband. He went from sub 1Mb on AOL to 15Mb on VFast and at a reasonable price.

What is the general consensus about the reliability of Tethered mobile broadband? I know that broadband has a bad rep(as good experiences are rarely reported) but I have had a rock solid connection with Virginmedia Broadband for many years and I do wander if tethering technology can match it.

Not at the prices you can pay for it (and the low usage you can get with it also).

You need a phone line for satellite broadband. It's only the downlink that comes over satellite. The phone line id for the uplink.

Not on all systems. For example:
    http://www.satelliteinternet.co.uk/how-it-works
Both the uplink and the downlink are via satellite.
