Stopping Distances

What is with some drivers determined to drive up the a*se of other cars?
Was driving home on the motorway this evening, snow is coming down really heavy, outside lane is not useable due to drifts and the other 2 lanes are pretty slushy, getting worse all the time. Cars in the inside lane were going about 25mph, I'm doing about 35 in the middle lane, roughly the same speed as the car in front, which I am following a good 100-150m back from. Now the cars in the inside lane have, in the majority of cases less than 2 car lengths between them, not enough stopping distance for good driving conditions, let alone the abysmal conditions out there this evening and then some eejit comes tearing up behind me and proceeds to sit on my bumper. Grrrrrr
So to all drivers out there, make sure you leave enough space between you and the car in front, if they get in to difficulties there is no way you will stop in time before going up their a*se in these conditions.

I wold argue even in poor conditions a stopping distance of 150 metres when you are travelling at 35 MPH seems excessive. If the guy behind you wants to go faster than 35 MPH and he can't use the overtaking lane I could see why he was annoyed with you!
Still it's very dangerous. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Boils down to the basic fact that some people are bloody stupid. My house is at the top of a bank, the road doesn't get gritted so its treacherous. I came down the bank on Sunday morning in 2nd gear, braking well before the junction at the bottom because I knew I'd slide a bit. I look in my mirror and there is a moron, tanking down behind me who doesn't stand a chance of stopping on the ice.
Fortunately the main road was clear and I'd gone before he slid out of the junction narrowly missing something coming up the road.0 -

Yes but I couldn't pull in to inside lane as I was overtaking and there was nowhere near enough room between cars for me to pull in. If I was hogging the middle lane with nothing inside me I could understand.0 -

Yes that's fair enough the mans obviously a !!!!! How did the situation end? Did you pull in eventually or did he risk the outside lane? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I pulled in as soon as I'd overtaken all the cars in the inside lane. Risking the outside lane would have made him a bigger !!!! than he already is and would most likely of ended up with him taking out all three lanes of traffic while he was at it :eek:0

On my way home today there was an idiot driving so close behind me on the motorway that initially I couldn't even tell a car was there - I couldn't see the headlights! Once he got past me he did the exact same to the car in front.
Sadly, I see the same behaviour pretty much every day.0 -
I find that once I've used the second lane to over take it's very easy to get into lane one, I use my indicators. It works a treat.0

Something Similiar happened to me a couple of years ago. I was coming down a really Icy hill and going at maybe 5 to 10 mph. Car in front of me was doing the same and I was miles away from it. This idiot in a Golf (May have been a Focus) comes storming up behind me I then see this cretin sliding all around the road before he (Or she) has to slam their car up on the pavement to avoid writing it off. It really is about time that an IQ test was required for a driving licence. If you can't walk on it surelly you are going to have problems driving on it.Iva started Dec 2018.0 -

The problem is exacerbated by idiots who don't pull in, and just sit in the middle / outside lane. Because this behaviour is now so common, other drivers either have to pass on the inside, or drive right up to the car in front to make the point that they want to pass.0 -
