Traffic Cameras or Stealth Tax

I accept there should be more Police presence of the roads, after all we appear to be paying far more Council tax to pay for Police.
Bad driving is also a result of speeding or rather in appropriate speed, even in a 30mph zone, 30mph can be too much.
There will always be situations where speed cameras wont stop people speeding, they may make people think twice about it, but there will always be bone heads who don't give a damn about anyone BUT themselves.
It makes me so angry that some who get caught drink driving almost get of scot free because they claim that there lively hood would be affected, that's every more reason why they shouldnt drink and drive.
The argument that speed cameras create accidents because of braking doenst wash with me, if you adhere the laws of the roads, then you shoulndt need excessive breaking to slow down, because of speed cameras.
I wasn't aware that owners of foreign vehicles get off free should they be caught speeding, I dont think its acceptable for anyone to get off, regardless of where they come from.

A word of caution - if you're tempted to buy the ebook on ebay on how to avoid getting/paying for a speeding/parking ticket, don't bother, it's a load of tosh.
I have several ways (that actually work) of avoiding paying them/taking the points (most of which are perfectly legal, and a few are 'dubious'), but I can't post them here.0 -
The problem with foreign drivers is that if they are stopped by the police, the police have only 2 options - a ticking off and on yuor way, Jonny, or arrest and appearance in a magistrates court the next day. How do you want your 'tax dollars' spent.
'Tax dollars' sounds so much better than 'tax pounds', don't you think?0 -
A friend put an imitation speed camera outside his house (just the yellow box), as he and his neighbours were fed up with people hurtling into their village. The council told him to apply for planning permission, and it got in the press, negating any benefit.
Why is it that the people who object to these things make diversionary complaints about the alleged destination of the revenue, rather than look at themselves and start accepting responsibility for their own actions. The OP is paranoid about the chances of licence loss through further transgressions.
The solution is very simple. You must teach yourself to drive better. If you are at a constant speed of 30 mph and don't accelerate, the speed will not increase; any complaint that you are unfairly required to look at the speedometer too often is spurious.
The same goes for the other person's complaints that the camera is only a short distance after the start of the speed limit, and this is dangerous. No, it is the drivers who cannot see the speed limit ahead of them, and who have not already reduced speed to the limit at the start of it, without any panic braking, who are dangerous.
I was caught by a camera in a village in Beds that previously had a 40mph limit, but had reduced to 30. A lorry was parked in front of the speed limit sign on one side of the road, and as I concentrated on overtaking it after giving way to a car from the other direction, I missed the sign the other side. There were no small repeater signs of the limit, and the letter I received later said that the law did not allow them to place any. So I drove towards the camera at 38mph, having seen it from 200 yards away. I wrote, pleading guilty, pointing out that I could name at least 10 places in my home county, including my own village, that belied their statement. I suggested that the good villagers of K might be interested in this. The next time I went there, a series of small 30 reminders had been installed.0 -
Very good points andy88.
I think some people who speed always seem to blame other things without taking responsibility for there own actions.
The results of excessive speed can be a case of life and death for some victims. Just 1/2 mile from me 3 weeks ago a little boy lost his life as a result of a road traffic accident. Whilst I dont yet know the whether the driver was speeding, the difference between 30mph and 40mph is enormous.
It isnt just pedestrians who suffer, drivers, other road users, and residents do too. We MUST get the message that speeding is not only dangeorous but anti social.
2 years ago I did a road safety campaign for Brake at a local college informing students of the causes of speeding and along with the Police and local council we also displayed a vehicle where 2 students had died as a result of excessive speed.
I live on a residentail street is rife with speeding and will shorthly be getting traffic claming as the previous one didnt work
Incidentially just on local news the Stocksbridge bypass since cameras installed have dramatically cut deaths.

We had a local rat run which used to have an injury a week, since speed bumps hardly any. If you are worried about damaging your car on them, your'e going too fast.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Even at 30mph the humps have an effect on suspension shockers. What about the people who do have a proper facination into cars but cant use certain roads becuase not enough clearance underneath with these stupid humps.
Bring on satalite speed navigation. There won't be anyone left on the roads. :eek:0 -

OMG! Speeding twice and banned.......crazy!
Are the speed cameras for safety? If so why have all the foreign drivers caught speeding not had fines/points. Is it becuase the French are safe speeders? If it was implemented for the right reasons I'm sure we would all be ok with it, but there is so much evidence to say its not implemented for the right reasons. I dont think I've ever seen a speed camera outside a school....
Its all wrong! Big brother brought outside = earth0 -
T4i, I don't think the article you quote implies that this is being done for the wrong reasons, as you assert. It is possible to be banned for one speeding offence if bad enough, so I don't find the faults you do. If you drove more carefully and observantly you might see some of the many cameras near schools0
