Actually they do. They just don't send express packages via boat. DHL is a multimodal carrier, as is FedEx and UPS Supply Chain.

they will if the have a large amount of packages from a single source (enough to fill at least a 20ft container) as its a cheaper option for them

Express is the clue here. I dont think anyone would be content with their express parcels being sent by boat rather than plane.

Seriously mate, some of the info you have been posting is dodgy. If you pay DHL for an express delivery from USA to UK, they will not send it on a boat. Full stop. Only way it would happen is if mistakes were made. Express parcels from DHL = air, always.

they dont just deliver from USA, i have not mentioned USA. i have worked in a port when these have come in

DHL do at least two distinct service.

DHL express, which is always rail/road/air (depending on the distance and time).

And DHL World Mail, which from memory is a "surface" method that can use ships, or might use spare air capacity.

You'll almost certainly never see a DHL express container arrive by ship for obvious reasons (they can ship it halfway round the world by air in the time it would take to get from say Holland to the UK by ship).

DHL Worldmail items are, from memory dealt with mainly by RM over here, up to and including collection of taxes due, as it's a non priority service that hands off to the "local" postal service for the final leg*.

DHL Express on the other hand is pretty much all done in house by DHL, including final delivery from memory.



*From memory I've had a bunch of DHL Worldmail packages arrive via my postie or Parcel Force with DVD's I've ordered from the states, whilst every DHL express package has been delivered by a DHL van.
