The GLG Japan Apha fund that I have is hedged, I don't know whether that is important at the moment with the direction of the currencies or not? Can anyone elighten me whether it is a consideration or not if I should invest in another Japan fund?
No it's the HSBC Japan index.
I think I've rambled already as our posts crossed about hedging.
You know that the fact that your units are priced in £ doesn't necessarily mean it's hedged? The GLG fund has several flavours I think.
To me it's not always clear either. The fact sheet for the unhedged version of the GLG fund doesn't actually highlight currency risk IIRC. Maybe it's deemed obvious in a 'foreign' fund."Things are never so bad they can't be made worse" - Humphrey Bogart0 -
Redbuzzard - thanks very much, may just be a stream of consciousness, but an excellent one! Very useful indeed.0

Yes, thanks for taking the time to write that - it's given me at least three new charts to look at every morning.

I opened a S & S Isa in 2011 and one of the funds I bought into was a Japan Tracker.
Its done very well .... so far!0 -
The time to look at investing in an area or sector is when it has been battered and no one else wants to buy. I got in when the Nikkei was at around 8650-8700. I am taking profits now, my portfolio is down form 26% Japan to about 9% now. I may reenter later but now is not the time to chase Japan imho.

Go on then...which battered sector looks attractive just now?:)"Things are never so bad they can't be made worse" - Humphrey Bogart0 -

Agree with not chasing, but I'm okay with cycling in its slipstream while keeping a keen eye on the brake lights.

I am happy in the slipstream too - have only been in Japan for three months but happy with profit even if took the money out tomorrow
Would like some pointers on recognising that the breaklights are flickering - what will the warning signs be, other than watching my fund?0 -
I get your point, but in the case of Japan you might then have been investing for much of the last two and a half decades after the Nikkei peaked at over 38.900 in 1989 and you wouldn't have done very well.Jegersmart wrote: »The time to look at investing in an area or sector is when it has been battered and no one else wants to buy....".....where it is corrupt, purge it....."0
