Laminate floors & dust

I live in a flat with all laminate floors and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to keep the dust levels down so im not dusting daily. If i dont sweep under my bed at least once a week its turns into some kind of mutant jungle of dust and hair.

All ideas welcome.

Thanks in advance

I see it this way, at least you can see it and it's not just getting stuck in a carpet, yuk!

I vacuum instead of sweeping or I find half the time I just end up moving half of it about. Sweeping kicks a lot of dust up which doesn't get removed. Bedroom will usually be the worst as thats where you shed most skin and hair, ewwwy thought I know but true.

I found when we were in the room with wood floors, vacuuming under bed & rest of the floor weekly and cleaning linen of course was the norm and helped keep it down.
One day I might be more organised...........

I damp dust my laminate floors as I find it picks more up that way.

I bought a Dirt Devil dust buster in Homebase for 10 pounds, and it's the best ten pounds I've ever spent!

You can quickly pick up spillages, and soon have skirting boards all clean. I use it every day.

Hoover and then wash :) But I have 1 very hairy dog and 2 cats so if I don't then I have dust bunnies trying to take over the house... I would love to change upstair to laminate too but finances does not allow at the moment... drat! We only have it downstairs because we got ink on the carpet so insurance paid out and we decided to have laminate instead... much more hygenic :)

Yup, it is gross if you leave it too long :)

I have one of those sweeper things that look a bit like a mop but is flat and quite a big surface area so it only takes about five mins to do a quick sweep around. Okay needs done 2-3 times pw but so much handier than hoovering that I'm prepared to cope with it. Also we have tiles in the kitchen that have ridges in and they're a nightmare since the dirt catches in them so the floor seem so much easier to do :)

Taking off outdoor shoes etc at front door helps a bit...
  • thanks, think ill get small hoover so can suck dust from under bed instead of having to keep moving it. Looking around im thinking of goin minimalist as well, if theres no junk around to collect the dust should make it easier as will only be sweeping an empty room (sooo tempting)

DH likes to vac ours but I don't see the point in using the electricity. I use a broom but don't like kicking up dust (I have asthma.) I sweep without flicking the brush, then stop with the brush still on the floor and lift it and move it etc. It doesn't stir up the dust (and cat hair) as much so doesn't bother my asthma and doesn't make for a lot of dusting an hour later!

I bought one of those large flat mop type things and agree it's great - I sweep or hoover about once a week and then swish the mop/duster thing around every other day. Only takes a few seconds per room. Got it from Wilkos for £10.

I also have a small one with a handle (looks a bit like a handbrush) which I use for the stairs and nooks and crannies. Bought this at the £1 shop.

They not only keep the dust down they seem to give the surfaces a bit of a shine too. (They don't make the floors slippery though - just a nice sheen).

I have a vileda brush that has kind of a flat foam side on it. Hard to describe, but what happens is the bristles sweep the big stuff, and the foamy bit catches other dust and hair. That way when you sweep you aren't just moving dust around.
