  • Can I just clear one thing up, that I am not sure about?

At the moment I get £115 pw State Pension and have a Local Government Pension to draw next year of about £60 a week.

If I were reaching Pension age in, say, 2017, after this flat rate pension has come in, would I get £145 plus the £60?

(However I can't say I have lost out as I have drawn mine since age age 60, instead of 65 or later like those who will retire with the flat rate pension).

Hi SDW, as far as I am aware, what you get now wont change,

It wont affect any of us who are getting state pension/serps etc.

Which is good for my OH as he gets more than the £140 buut I would get more if that was the case but Im glad, it clarifies things,

It is just getting far too complicated now.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I will continue to protest for all the injustices the governement impose on good hard working people who have paid in for at least 10 years.

That's less than 25% of the time most people work/pay in for.

The way I see it, 7DW, is that if you were retiring in 2017 you would get £145 if you'd contributed for 35 years (currently 30 years), and you would also get your Local Government Pension which would be treated in the same way as any Company pension is (ie State Pension is taxable via your Private/Company/Local Government etc pension).

And if you had SERPS etc which would have taken you over £145, you should not be worse off in 2017. So no means testing to get to £145 or that equivalent in 2017 money.

So the OP is, if I've got it right, correct in saying that people claiming their pension in 2017 will be better off if they have the full number of qualifying years than us, and that with inflation percentages that difference will increase over time.

    Is that about it?

PS re the collecting at 60 rather than the 65 and onwards that people have to collect, the increased claiming age start is supposed to be "neutral" in that those younger people will supposedly (actuarially, if that is the word), live longer so they will have their pensions for the same period of time unless we all outlive the statistics! Here's hoping.... I'm personally unsure of these stats, but we'll see in due course!

As I understand it the £145 would be reduced for the years you were contracted out i.e. the years you were in the local govt pension scheme but if that took you below what you had earned under the current scheme, in your case £115, you would be able to have the £115 as that is guaranteed. On top of this you would get your local govt pension. I don't know if you would get anymore than £115 as I don't know how many years you were contracted out or how much they will deduct per year. You would also need 35 years contribution not 30 as now.

For me I have a local government pension scheme and my SRP plus S2P is going to be £148, from current forecast, so I will get that even if they reduce it for the contracted out years. Hope that makes sense.

 Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age.
Sometimes age just shows up all by itself ;)

In the end, it's not the years in your life
that count....it's the life in your years :D

No offence but most pensioners are better off than people who work, especially if they live in sheltered accommodation with no council tax or heating to pay!

There are a lot of things wrong with the benefit system, but what's the point complaining! Nothing is ever done!

My father, through his hard work & industry, with his 2 x Occupational Pensions and State Pension at the age of 72, earns more than me at 46, and I am still working !

(When I retire I will get a Civil Service Pension and my State Pension).

Do I object to him earning more than me ?

The hell I dont as he did 25 years in the RAF (of which 22 count for his pension) and then 23 years with British Aerospace (where he paid the max contributions).

Oh and he WAS a Polish immigrant before he was naturalised back in 1948 , so I would say he has paid his dues and his entitled to his State Pension - wouldnt you Meercat ?

Oh, so you expect people to read your posts, rise up in arms and bombard their MPs with complaints but you don't even have the courtesy to read what people have posted in reply?

    That's just plain rude.
