  • Hi 123money,

    2 points:

    (i) Intensive courses dont teach you how to drive, they teach you how to pass the test. You can't gain any on the road experience doing a course like that - dangerous for both you and other drivers

(ii) The cheapest lessons aren't always the best. Look what you get for your money

This is one of the reasons I can't get enough of this site. Whatever I might be turning over in my mind. I know I will come in here and a quick search will bring up others in the same boat. 123, this is the mission I have been on this morning and I have got my eyes on a couple and have even spoken to David from learning to drive (I left a message and he phone me back within 40mins).

I was going to post to see what people's thoughts were on this but tbh I think it comes down to personal choice and just biting the bullet. Here is the shortlist I am currently working with (even though i think i already have my mind made up).

The YHA link is where I would stay as it is only 10.95 a night and it is after all about MS!

I disagree with BBB on his first point. I can only talk for myself but I have personally spent almost £1000 on drving lessons and clocked up well over 35hrs over a period of a year. The problem is I stopped in 2004 as 'life' got in the way. Time constraints means that the intensive course is the most practical option for me. I am not trying to cut corners. I have got a wealth of road experience (especially living in London) and I am a safe driver.

I do however agree with your second point, from my research I can see that there is hardly anything in the prices of most intensive courses, apart from the London ones of course but hey what would we expect!

Another idea would be to save up your Clubcard vouchers as you can get driving lessons really cheaply with BSM.

  • i passed with bsm and used the clubard points. saved a ton of money.
i think you get 5 lessons in the pack now and all those books, etc - once you get your copy to learn from give them away as presents to friends or other learners
my friend did intenstive but she passed third time, so i dont see the point. you need to gain experience it took my 5/6 months and passed first time cause i knew the car better, drive well, plan ahead. intenstive just teach you what you'd do on a test so i'd avoid that.

I know someone who spent a few hundred on an intense course, passed her test within a week and after driving about a mile and a half decided real life driving was too scary and hasnt been behind the wheel since! She knows the theory of driving but doesnt have the confidence that you get from regular driving lessons to actually put it into practice.
  • Be very careful with intensive driving courses - they are very rarely suitable for people who have never driven before, and can wind up costing much much more than regular lessons.

With regards to BSM and the clubcard points - you will usually be able to find a good local instructor who will charge less than BSM in the first place (and you won't get a trainee instructor either).

If you have driven before and have time constraints which mean you need to get through a test quickly then they can be useful, but find someone you trust to do the course with - make sure you talk to your instructor (on the phone or at an assessment lesson if at all possible).

Bear in mind that once you have passed your intensive course in Blackpool or the Outer Hebrides you will then need to spend time driving with care around your home turf to "learn" your own area.

Good luck guys - remember, doing the research costs nothing, 2pass have a very good forum for learners where you can get loads of info and advice for nowt.

Quick question, after you have passed your test,
Could you afford to buy, insure, run and maintain a car?
If not, who's car are you going to drive?
If your parent's car, can you afford to pay the extra insurance cost?
Can you afford to do the pass plus course?

tbh here, if you can't afford to learn to drive, how are you going to afford a car?
