Hi happyrainbow
For the last few months, I've had problems with these sites too - the pages come up (so different to your problem) but the formatting is all wrong, no pictures etc. My Roboform can't work with them, so I can't enter the comps any more.
I've got K9 on my pc, and I've noticed that after I try the first one (any of the sites on your list) I then keep getting warnings that ip address 205.234.175.175:443 is trying to access my computer.
I can't tell if it safe to allow this or not, so I've left things as they are but suspect this is what is causing my problem.
Have you got any blocking software or firewall rules which could be blocking the sites ?Best win ever: Trip to the Galapagos Islands in 20100 -

What browser are you using?
Are you broadband or dial-up?
When was the last time you ran a virus/malware scan?
Off the top of my head I would say you had a malware infection which is blocking your access to certain sites.
If you don't have anti-malware installed then it is worth doing so as when you are visiting so many sites to enter competitions you can pick up all sorts of stuff you don't want. Your anti-virus is not enough to protect you.
For the time being, don't try to connect to any more sites until you clean your system out.
avg but have tried turning off makes no difference
firefox
virgin broadband
empty cache every night
run malware checker weekly

Hi Happyrainbow,
I'm wondering if you have a problem with the Add-ons/extensions in Firefox. (Control-Shift-A or Tools>Add ons) Have a look at which ones you have running and try disabling them one at a time and see if this works. Personally I don't have anything running except Add Blocker as they can choke up your connection and do weird things.
You could try uninstalling FF and reinstalling from Mozilla. I stick with an older version (15) as the newer version seems to have a few glitches which irritate the hell out of me. Don't worry about your bookmarks being lost. They are automatically saved and stored in your Favourites folder in Documents - you can check that - and you don't click to uninstall personal information (I think that's an option - been a while since I did a reinstall)
Try those two things first and see what happens. Sorry not to be more specific just now but doing too much at once won't find where the problem is. Let us know how you get on. If you need help to uninstall FF then shout.
PS - just thought, have you tried using Internet Explorer - it should be installed on your PC even if you never use it. I sometimes have to resort to that when FF is having a wobbly. You can run the two together no problems and just close down IE when you have tried it. Just copy and paste the URL into IE and Go and see if it opens the entry page. Worth a try.0 -

Hi is it just the sites you've mentioned or are those a selection of sites you can't get onto? If they are from the same company ie EMAP or Conde Nast for example then they may have blocked your IP by mistake
Try entering the sites via this link http://www.hidemyass.com/ it will block your IP address temporary.
If you can log on via this link then it looks like an IP problem0 -

i really appriciate your help your have made my week x0 -
well armed with the knowledge it was my ip address that is the problem i rang virginmedia after hanging up on india who said all there could do was suggest i paid for a business line i ranging again threatening to pull the contract they then put me through to someone in tech who connected to my pc for over an hour but couldnt help so he put me through to someone higher and he tried to sort it
in the end he said as they were fulfilling their contract by getting to all pages on the web sites apart from the comp pages that basicly virgin media werent at fault and that i either had to speak to ipc media and get them to sort it out or pay for an upgrade that will give me a new hub/router and therefore a new ip address
i explained i cant afford an upgrade and that that was one of the reasons i was comping
so it has been left with me
i will trying ringing ipc media tomorrow but dont hold out much hope this is just crazy0 -
Have you tried turning your router off at the wall for a few seconds, and then back on? This normally gets you a new IP address and may solve the issue.0
