Were you born bitter or did it just creep up on you with age?

If you're just looking for affirmation that your deserving of compensation you're in the wrong place i'm afraid. There are many boards out there that will simply tell you what you want to hear - this is not one of them

It happened to me though once. In a co-op, I needed to money for dinner as I was out of town - had to go without unfortunately. But just put it down to 'one of those things'. Lifes full of mishaps, we may as well deal with it and move on. This just isn't one of those situations worth worrying about.

Getting compensation from banks is difficult. The recommended procedure is to wander in wearing a balaclava, holding a gun and carrying a bag marked "swag".

I believe this approach is not recommended by watchdog or Martin Lewis.

  • This has happened to me twice! It's a pain but I can't see you getting anything out of it. I'm usually happy to have a good whine if I feel wronged lol....but I kind of accepted it.

I put my link debit card in an ATM today (Sunday). The screen was not displaying any fault warning at the time. The card went in the slot and just as it went inside the machine, the screen promptly went blank. The ATM had crashed. I waited there as it went through the whole reboot, and after about three minutes it returned to normal, but there was no way of getting my card back.

I've cancelled the card and ordered a new one, natch. I have had this card for a year and it has worked perfectly. In fact I had only used it some five minutes previous to the ATM crash in a shop's chip and pin machine.

Upon returning home I phoned the bank concerned (I'm not a customer) to tell them about the fault and to raise a complaint.

My question for the forum is has this happened to anyone before (i.e. your card's been retained by the machine when it's an ATM fault and no blame attaches to you). How did you go about pursuing your complaint and what, if any, compensation did you get?

    Any advice gratefully received.

Your story is familiar, but I’m not sure why you think you are entitled to any compensation.

This happened to my son recently. We were at the hospital, and needed cash to pay the car park fee. The queue was about 4-5 deep so he patiently waited. Eventually he put his card in, punched in his pin, and entered the amount he wanted to withdraw and at this point the power in this area of the building went off. Staff appeared to know that is was a power test yet there was no warning for outpatients. The power did come back on a few minutes later and no the card didn’t reappear and nor did his cash. My son rang the helpline number at the machine, who informed him his card would have been shredded. Whether this piece of information is true, I couldn’t tell you.

Without any hesitation my son then complained at reception and they were very quick to offer the small amount he needed to leave the car park.

By now he had rang the bank to cancel his card, and we then drove to his branch which was close to home, explained what had happened, a new card was ordered and he was offered a cash withdrawal if he needed it. Yes it was an inconvenience to him, that lasted two days before his new card arrived, but it certainly wasn’t the banks fault.
When I was growing up my father would always tell me that my best friend was my pocket!

Getting compensation isn't difficult, however I think that even the 'Can I do an £80k transfer to xxx' wouldn't work in this case, as the bank itself is not at fault.

Bit of an over-reaction, every bank would have done the same. What will you do when you run out of banks whose ATMs you are prepared to use?

Not really, I bank at lloyds TSB and one day when their was a long queue i went 2 doors down to Barclays and used a lobby machine it kept my card, so i went to the customer service desk and explained, she said no problem which machine i told her and she when away and come back with my card and told me the magnetic strip was scratched which is the most likely cause why the card was retained

This happened to me while on a hen weekend in Bath, to make matters worse, due to possibly too much alcohol, I failed the security questions when I rang up to cancel the card and order a new one so had go go into a branch the following weekend with ID to get the new card ordered. Luckily I had my credit card on me so could get cash out with that (albeit for a fee and from a different machine).
Not sure what you want compensation for, yes it is a pain in the a*se but have you actually suffered a loss of any sort?

Nothing wrong with stating the truth. What contractual relationship do you have with the ATM owner anyway?

Read the T&Cs of your bank account, you'll find machinery malfunctions covered there.
