I meant using regular 1st class letter stamps, which I do have a small supply of, not Large Letter specific stamps.

I realise that but you said '

The size and weight is such that it could go as a 1st Class Large Letter - cost £1.20.' which seems to imply that a 1st class large letter is £1.20

First class Large Letter starts at 90p for up to 100g then it's dependant on the weight; in this case it must weigh between 101g-250g which is £1.20.

    HTH.

Correct - the whole package is 115g, so in the £1.20 charge band.

I've done this before - I wrote '1st class large letter up to 250g' on it, and it arrived quickly :)

Harmless enough I suppose. But writng on the packaging won't make any difference. It will be treated as first class anyway.

Just to confirm, there's no problem doing this. I often use combinations of stamps to make up postage for my small items.

    Depends on weight.

Op - you can do this as many times as you want - as long as the value adds up.

I can't see why some think this is not a normal thing to do - i often do it.

Best to write FIRST CLASS below the stamps. Stops it getting thrown in with 2nd.

I do exactly the same and never had a problem with non-delivery or the recipient having to pay excess postage fees.

  • I do the same with all my parcels, i just write

"2PK SECOND CLASS PACKET" and "£2.20 xxx grams"

on it so its clear I have done it correctly. Sometimes they arrive next day so doesnt hold it up.

The only thing I would say is large letter is only up to 25mm and if I was going to package a hard drive I would use bubble wrap, some card and a jiffy as hard drives can be damaged by being knocked - and it would end up being a lot bigger than 25mm!!

    Thanks for the additional replies.

I did package it up in bubble wrap inside a jiffy bag but was still within 25mm - 'tis a laptop hard drive, so not big or heavy.

As it is I did manage to get to the post office today. Just as well as it later occurred to me there was another hazard - not sure how advisable it would be to have a hard drive in a postbox overnight in freezing temperatures!!!

Thanks all for the help!
