Got to laugh at johnnyl. Dont know about the rest of you but I cant take someone seriously when they express themsleves in an agressive tone and use swear words. It totally undermines the point they are trying to get across.

putting that aside, do you agree that those are examples of hypocrisy. Is my basic point correct, even if you dont agree with the method of delivery

People would soon start kicking off if supermarket staff started callin in en-masse because of the snow and shops had to close! Or are they somehow less worthy than teachers?

A couple of years ago the roads were so bad here that the buses weren't running for a few days - and I live in a town. I have no clue as to whether the supermarkets were fully staffed during this period or not; because the only shops we could get to were those we could trudge to. I would hope that the managers of supermarkets would have the sense not to expect their staff to travel in if the roads were so bad. We had people stranded in our town because they couldn't get home to nearby towns; too far to walk and deep snow. Not for nothing do I now keep a sleeping bag in the car in winter, along with hiking boots, a torch, a high vis vest and extra warm clothing.

The reality is that most schools closed on Friday because the school transport services refused to send out buses after 1pm. What are school supposed to do in that case?
I can see how this applies to secondary schools, but what about primary schools where the vast majority of pupils live within walking distance?

again it depends what catchment area the primary school has - mine was 1.99 miles away from my home, and no public transport or school provided transport. It was a rural school, and there were lots of us who were a similar distance away from it, no bus routes, so the roads weren't cleared either.

Now this bugs me, we live 3/4hr to an hour by foot away from the primary schools that my children attended. For 15 years we walked every day, rain, shine or snow, with babies in pushchairs and toddlers. Folks that lived nearer would not show up at the school as it was too snowy! Oh really? Cos if I could make it, so could anyone!

I can understand small and rural schools closing, but there is no reason why most schools can't open tomorrow.

Anyone worried about being able to get to work needs to investigate ways of getting closer ahead of bad weather and staying there. Just as my husband might consider staying in a hotel in London for example, some teachers, family issues aside, could do the same.

When was the last time you priced up staying in London!!!!!??? Goodness you sound like a Manager. With so many ways of remote working these day, there is no excuse to risk your life getting into work over snow covered ice. Unless you are saving lives of course. Which most of us aren't.

Let the hard working kids have a few days off in the snow, sometimes life experiences are the most important of all.

Well that's that then - 2 schools shut and the third is opening at 10.30am. At least I know before I pack them out the door on their journeys. The only thing that confuses me is that one of the shut schools and the open one share a campus. How can one be 'snowbound' (their words not mine) but other can open, albeit a bit later than normal.

Don't forget that most teachers don't live within walking distance of school. I'm currently living around 15 miles away & was quite willing to go in this morning despite being in a village that is difficult to access in snow & ice but school was shut anyway. Don't tar all teachers with the same brush.

2 miles is not that far. It's half an hour ish. I can walk that and back mos days and I am often using walking stick.
