The easiest way to get rid of the box which is formatted as underline is probably to delete it - try backspace. Another trick to get rid of unwanted formatting easily is to cut the text then paste it using paste - paste special - unformatted text.

If you have text which is formatted as underline and you want to take the underline off, highlight that text and press the underline button again. (If it underlines extra stuff instead of taking the underline off, don't dispair, leave everything highlighted and press it another time!) When you start typing, check whether the underline button is pressed or not - if it is, press it again to turn underline off.

To be honest, what you are describing are perfectly normal features of Word - I think you might be best doing some Word tutorials to get used to the way it works.

(Oh, and the upside down b is called the paragraph mark!)

Thank you everyone for your help and advice. I was going round in circles this morning and getting very frustrated so I rang my computer engineer who came out and has sorted it out. He is very experienced but it took him an hour to get it back to how it was. I'm quite cynical and don't like being taken for a ride but it was obvious to anyone that it was a challenge. I really appreciate all the effort you all went to, to help me. Many thanks
