iphone 5 - data roaming on or off?

Hi everyone,
My OH has just got an iphone 5, his contract includes 1gb of data each month. He has got the phone because it looks good (wheres the face palm icon when you need it :rotfl:). While here in the UK, should his data roaming be on or off, to get the most out of the phone? I'd imagine he would occasionally want to use internet etc from his phone when not in his wifi location.
As you can tell - I am a non-smartphone user.

Data roaming would normally be turned off when overseas as data charges when roaming can be astronomical. In the UK (I guess your OH's contract is with a UK provider) you would normally have data roaming on.
Beware that 1 GB is not a lot of data, I used 1.7 GB in the first week with my new iPhone 5.
The advantage of a smart phone is being able to have instant access to email, Skype, etc. without needing to power up a laptop. So be prepared to keep an eye on the amount of data used.0 -

1gb is plenty, it all depends on how you are using the device, I have unlimited data, so no need to curb the use, but it is rare if I go over 500mb in a month.0 -
While in the UK, the Data Roaming question is not relevant, you can leave it switched to off all the time. Your OH will still be able to access data while in the UK, it will only affect when not on the home network, ie when abroad. Personally as an iPhone user, 500MB is plenty as I use WiFi at home, so should be ok with 1GB, but as the previous poster said, with a new toy it could take a hammering.0
