Congratulations CWCW and you have done well to withstand the sarky comments often made on this board. Fear uncertainty doubt and playing the safety angle seem to be the stock in trade of electricians in particular, and as you say on other boards there isn;t this call to get in a plumber or financial advisor or professional shopper. This is MSE.
It begs the question if these helpers are so smart how come they have time to rubbish honest enquiries.
I have recently been at the sharp end of a real nasty electrician who did his best to put me down (am in late seventies).
I know work is short but anyone who has the ability to learn modern electrics should be in it for the long haul and learning customer relations and an honest approach should be part of the job.

had the fan had no stickers on it then you wouldn't have had a clue, a multimeter would have told you in seconds what the voltage was however as you didn't even know this then your knowledge of electrics is nearly zero which is why everyone said get a sparkie, so instead of getting on your high horse maybe you should have taken everyones advice

Believe it or not, but an electrician wouldn't have known it either at some point in their life. We all start somewhere, which is the point I was trying to make. Pointing in the right direction is all that was being asked for, not snide and repetitive, pointless comments. If I'd have listened to most people on here I'd be £100 out of pocket. As it is, I've fixed up a new fan by myself for free. Better advice would have been to suggest how I could find out the voltage for myself and, if unable to, THEN get an electrician in.

As already said, I sorted it myself once I determined what the voltage was, which is all that was being asked for fundamentally. Why post on a forum just to advise the bleeding obvious? Useful tips as a starting point to building up knowledge is a much better use of forum posting time.
