Extractor Fan In Shower Cubicle

We recently bought a house and it has an extractor fan on the wall of the shower cubicle. I have become obsessed with it because it is noisy so I've been trying to reduce the noise.

When looking for quieter alternatives I notice that the fan should be low voltage if in a shower cubicle. Apparently these have a separate transformer in a drier area.

I've looked up the current model fan and it could be low voltage or normal voltage depending on the exact model. The wiring inside the fan has one thin brown, one thick brown, and one blue cable. How can I find out for sure what this is?

Also, I know it is on the same circuit as the lighting, and if I understand the Consumer Unit (rewired 2006) correctly, lighting circuits aren't RCD protected. Is this right?

Does this sound a dangerous set up? I don't want me or my wife to electrocute ourselves in the shower one day. It is quite a new bathroom but it does seem strange to have an extractor fan on the wall in a shower cubicle.

Respectfully, it is apparent that you have very little knowledge of electrics.

I would suggest you pay an electrician to come and look at it and advise you accordingly.

    Is it that obvious?! :rotfl:

If it is low voltage though, then it's quite safe from what I've read, and we could just buy another low voltage one to replace it. So is there any way to tell if it is normal or low voltage without getting an electrician in? If it isn't, then I would get one in to make it safe asap.

My best advice would be this: just get someone in.

Your best course of action would be to follow expert advice that phil99 has given you...

    I sure will do.

In the mean time, is there any way to tell what voltage the existing fan is?

Please don't reply only to tell me to get an electrician in, I will go insane.

Why are you letting it bother you. Most people are in the shower for a few minutes.

Have a sing song while your in there, that'll sort you out.

If you cant or dont want to do that.

    GET AN ELECTRICIAN IN...........:D
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

    Yes.

Grab hold of the bare wires.

If you survive it is probably low voltage.

    Good luck. :D

Do as your Mother tells you, otherwise early to bed for you.
