Worth moving the router?

Hi

My son has a gaming PC and XBox in his room that uses a solwise homeplug device for online gaming and Xbox Live.

The current set up is that the router (Sky) is downstairs to the rear of the property. He is complaining about the speed. Our current speed on the exhange is 8MB download.

Would getting a phone line fitted to his room and basing the router there increase speed in the room rather than taking the network through solwise from downstairs?

I dont think it would, he thinks it will. Looking at costs circa £50 for a phone socket in the bedroom, any advice? Would it work?

It wont, the home plug soloution is exactly the same. Is sky slowing you connection down
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Log on to you router and post the line statistics to confirm your connection speed.

Connecting your router to a long extension is never a good idea. Put it as near to the master socket as possible.

    Firstly thanks for the replies.

    My router says

    DownStream Connection Speed 8128
    UpStream Connection Speed 448

We are going to move to plusnet soon I just wanted to rule my home set up.

The homeplug is doing the job and you won't improve anything moving that router. Switching to Plusnet from Sky for a like for like service (ADSL to ADSL) won't do much different. It will still be 8mb.

    Points to consider.

    1. Whatever is having slow speed, what other devices is using the internet? If any are using the internet, the speed is shared and will appear slow.

    2. Have you been downloading excessively and Sky limited your speeds?

    3. Is fibre optic available? Check with Sky or Plusnet (I recommend Plusnet) and see if you can get it, you will get a massive speed boost with it.

Those stats indicate a standard ADSL connection (up to 8 meg). If you can post more detailed stats we can estimate what you should get on ADSL2+ (up to 24 meg).

Are you moving to Plusnet fibre?

I'm not sure what latency is like using homeplugs ... if your son is a gamer (shoot-em-up type) then latency, particularly the stability of it, is very important. The lower the better, and the more-stable the better. Is it feasible to run a network cable from the router to your son's room? Maybe also wire in a switch (maybe even a wifi access point) in his room to allow multiple connections rather than a single connection.

I would highly recommend plus.net fibre with the Pro add-on for an extra £5 a month. This will prioritize the traffic above all else so the latency is reduced.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

You are out of date. Pro add on not needed if you switch to an unlimited package as it's basically included.

what sort of ping times are showing for your connection? dl&ul speed can be secondary when it comes to online gaming..

would suggest checking these stats as is, then move the modem\router nearer to the master socket to discount the internal wiring affect (be suprised how much this can affect)..

home plugs can also affect ping times too, so if possible check the stats via the home plug, and with direct wire to the router in these locations to find out the optimal setup.. I managed to get my sky connection to improve by 4mb and slash ping times by using master socket with ethernet cable then running between.. homeplugs do help for home streaming but create a disadvantage with gaming..
