So are you saying that millions of drivers in the UK are using their satnavs against the law? What fine would they be risking? I have never heard of anyone being prosecuted.

I can only repeat that mot stations are not taking my sat nav mount off the windscreen for no good reason and I suggest its because of legal reasons

the mot garages are taking it off as it is an mot fail but as far as i know it is not illegal to use it or as others have said how many motorists have charged with that offence

Suggest that the OP contacts the Police and asks them what constitutes an offence and what doesn't, problem solved.
  • I can't see how having a camera attached to your windscreen is any different to having a sat nav attached. From what i have read you can have a suction mount attached to your windscreen as long as it is not obstructing your view and is within the following rules. On a website i looked at it stated:

Directly infront of the driver it can only encroach the wiper sweep by 1cm max.
The rest of the wiper sweep (centre of windscreen / passenger side) it can only encroach by 4cm max.

Perhaps JethroUK is placing it in an illegal area of the windscreen which is why the mot garages keep removing it.

On this other website i read it states:

Be warned, if you use a suction mounted car camera in the UK, if the device (camera and / or cradle and / or suction cup) intrudes more than 4cm into the secondary (pink) wiper clearance zone, or intrudes more than 1cm into the primary (red) wiper clearance zone of the windscreen, you are committing a serious traffic offence (dangerous driving) under the UK Road Traffic Act 1988.

If you want to use a car camera, make sure it is NOT windscreen suction mounted UNLESS it is guaranteed to be able to operate lawfully outside your particular vehicle's wiper clearance zone. Or, you can buy a dash mounted camera (again, make sure it does not obscure more than 1cm/4cm of the wiper cleared windscreen visibility area) or a visor mounted car camera.

This would indicate to me that it is perfectly legal as long as you follow the rules.

This website is for uk mot testers. w w w . mot uk . co . uk It talks alot about encroaching the wiper swept area of the windscreen.
