I would always go for personal recommendations over some website or company where tradesmen pay to be on it.

Get three quotes and you can always ask to see prior work.

Good trades paying to quote on a job? Sad state of affairs.

They are no more or less trustworthy than any guy you get from the yellow pages. Tradesmen aren't vetted and their work isn't inspected. The tradesmen have to pay for being on there, just the same as thy pay to go in yellow pages or advertise in your local paper.

    Think about it.

It's not difficult to manipulate the ratings on the ratedpeople website
  • Waste of time, as others have said, just another Yellow Pages, no vetting.

Get three quotes. Make sure they're qualified / gas safe / insured.

  • Rated People do no vetting at all. Traders pay around £40 per quarter + vat to receive emails with the jobs that people put on the system

THEN, if traders want the details , contact, address, they pay a fee to receive the details.

    1) As a part of the form you fill in, YOU have to estimate your expected budget. Problem, the higher that budget guess, the more the contractor pays for the lead. Anything between a few £'s to £45-£50 + vat.

    2) There is no limit to the amount of traders that pay for your details.
So they never know how many others they are up against.

    3) Traders can get friends to put cheap jobs on the system, (that don't really exist), pay a few pounds for the details and then there mates put a glowing report back on the system.... thats the rated bit. Do that a few times and your rate is good....

    4) If you go for the cheapest online quote, it has no bearing on the quote once the job is viewed by the trader. So be prepared to get a quote around your budget or low, just so they can come and see you.
  • I don't like RatedPeople at all. Once you post a job, three random tradesmen will pay to quote on your job and that's it. At least with MyBuilder you get to check out the reviews beforehand and choose who you'd like to phone and quote for your job.
  • I used Rated People once and regretted entering my phone number - I was bombarded with calls and text messages.

One guy who came round to quote was an absolute disgrace - knew nothing about the trade he claimed to work in.

Having said that, I did end up using one of the tradesmen I found via them, and there were no more problems than I'd expect with any other method of finding a tradesman.
