Surely the buyer has failed to protect themselve's or how would there details have been used.If i had used paypal's instructions i could have of still been scammed buyer could of claimed empty package or 100grams of anthing had been sent, the buyer would then win the case.

I am not trying to be funny i needed that money thats why sold it, I should of been more carefull but have never thought to look how people get scammed in that way i just wanted to know what will happen as i needed to pay something off and wont have the funds.

Forget the buyer, real or scammer, all that matters here is that you cannot invoke paypal seller protection so you are stuck.

Yes you will be hounded for this payment so please do follow my advice and go and talk to those knowledgable people on the debt boards about limits of harrassment by debt colleectors. Also of course you can no longer use paypal- and therefore by default ebay as the moment you get any funds into your paypal account they will be taken and used against your debt.

I haven't read all the small print but it's surprising that you got caught by this moneymaking scam.

You didn't need to look at how people get scammed but at the very least you needed to look at how to protect yourself. This wasn't £1.50 after all, it was a substantial amount of money.

And you didn't. Possibly because of the saving on 'postage'? That couple of quid saving will cost you dear.

It is pointless arguing the rights and wrongs, the debit is REAL, the debit is YOURS and you need now to do what you failed to do initially, and put some time and effort into working out what you should be doing to protect yourself and your credit rating - get advice.

its not my fault that paypal allowed a transaction for a high risk item and a payment from a hacked ebay account and even allow me time to go to the bank and withdraw the money.im still in deep shock that someone would have the cheek to come inperson to my door and do this also knowing that they have all my details address ect.paypal have told me that they are not allowed to take money from my bank without my permission.i will not be out of pocket with the item by restoring my negative balance wich i will refuse to pay you may think this is wrong but i cant see how paypal refuse to take any responsibility

But it's not Paypal's fault that you didn't follow their basic rule for seller protection; send the item via traceable means to the registered Paypal address.

I'm sorry, but you have been scammed, and there is NOTHING you can do, other than hope police catch the person. It's a well known scam on Ebay.

You MUST pay the money back to Paypal, otherwise they'll take you to court for it, you will end up with a CCJ, and could end up with a trashed credit rating, so won't be able to get loans, mortgages etc...

It's an expensive mistake to learn from, but you need to pay back the money, otherwise it might cost you more in the long run!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

You said yourself it you were suspicious. So why hand it over?

There is nothing you can do - unless the police help.

You owe paypal the money - and they will come after you and you will probably end up with a CCJ.

And just to add what techspec says, the Police will not get you your money back, but their involvement may assist in showing Paypal/the Courts that they should not pursue you. It's a long shot, but worthwhile.

Actually, it would be helpful if you came back here with any updates. This is not all about you, it is also helpful for others who may find themselves in a similar situation!
  • This is the big reason why if something feels wrong, it usually is. Especially when you are dealing with Ebay which is a haven for those sorts of people who try to scam you.

ALWAYS use recorded postage methods! Seriously I don't mean to sound harsh but your buyers 'mate' turns up at the door with an unconvincing accent and hardly says a word - and you just hand your item over? I am sorry you got scammed and it was an expensive lesson to learn but I hope you have learned it.

To add to others comments (hopefully more helpful than my above telling off!) get straight back onto the Police and get them involved again with this - I think this is your only hope. Especially if the mobile number is still in use as you said. Paypal can be rubbish at times - I've phoned their customer service before and they are clueless - but persevere.

Recorded would not be anywhere near the correct service for this. I assume, or at least I hope, seller had originally quoted for a specialist courier with enhanced insurance for gold. That makes it even stranger to me really though, if someone sells such a high end item and hopefully has spent time researching the correct courier to use then just hands it over at the door.

I do feel very sorry for the OP, but this is such a common scam, you fall over reports of it all the time and it's frustrating that despite all this these thieving scumbag scammers still find people naive enough to fall for it.
