Rover 25 temperature gauge query

Hi there
Rover 25 had new head gasket and head skimmed a couple of weeks ago. It also had a new water pump and thermostat. Since this work has been done the temperature gauge takes an age to get to just under half way; sometimes as long as 10-15 minutes. The heater is hot within a few minutes though. Garage says this is normal but since having the car in 2007 it's always reached half way up the temperature gauge within about 4 minutes.
Is this normal? If not; any ideas why it's taking forever?
Many thanks!

Possibly a different temperature thermostat has been fitted.
I wouldnt get too concerned.0 -
As above. As long as the heater gets hot fairly quickly and isn't overheating then all is good.0

Thanks so much for your replies; thats reassured me. I'm a tad paranoid about the car since having to have a new head fitted in 2010 then it goes again 2 years later!0

I know! If it hadn't flew through the MOT in October and didn't have just 47k on the clock for a 9 year old car it would had been dumped!0 -
OP If I remember correctly, the thermostats the K series fail in the open position. This means the car will not overheat but it will take an age to warm up, particularly in cold weather.
Running the car with effectively no thermostat is not a good idea long term.Sgt_Pepper wrote: »That's the joys of owning a Rover.
Or any other car. Considering Rovers haven't been made for donkey's years, there are still loads of them in daily use, so they can't be that bad.0 -

I'm a woman; what does that mean? Do I need go back to the garage?

Yes.
It could also be an airlock in the cooling system.0 -
Did they leave the thermostat out? Or its stuck open?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

I used to have one of those. Got shot after the head went for the second time (not the second time in my ownership thank god). 10-15 mins sounds pretty normal, it will depend on what kind of driving you do - if you're straight out onto a motorway it'll be very quick, if its stop start it'll be slower and worse for the car. I bow to gloomendoom's knowledge about thermostats though...0
