and if you're intested, 6db halves the signal strength

Actually, 6dB halves the *voltage*, 3dB halves the power.

If you really think the signal is too strong, buy the 12dB attenuator, or (the MSE method) try swinging your aerial around 180 degrees. The usual type TV antenna has a big blind spot at the back, so the signal will get weaker as you turn away from the boresight (pointing straight at the transmitter).

No, only if you point the antenna at something thats doing a good job of reflecting the signal.

Instead of guessing, why not look up the signal strength at your location? Type in your postcode here:

    Digital http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?DX
    Analogue http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tva.exe?DX

Analogue signal plus aerial gain must be less than 80dBuV.
Digital signal plus aerial gain must be at least 53dBuV for reliable reception.

    Typical aerial gain = 12dBd.

Not saying you're wrong, just thats it's not guaranteed - it depends on the site. Certainly worth a try *if* the aerial is easily accessible, before buying anything.
If this wasn't the MSE site, both you and I might well just say 'call an aerial installer' ;)

(BTW - radio designer for 20 years and also own business :p )
