I need help, Please.

I have a genuine item, that my father has asked me to sell for him!
Its pre 1970! (My father inherited it, in 1990) However he can find out the exact age of it tomorrow, (as it was bought for the christening of his brother or sister..... my aunt or uncle!) My Dad is almost 70!

I have searched and searched and Cannot find a price that he should sell it for, and I really don't want him to lose out :-(, and i wouldn't want anyone "extracting the urine" so to speak!!

My searches have brought up a number of varied prices... from £9.99-£299.00, I know there are companies in china that make replicas. However I have seen some Genuine ones being sold in America for $650:eek:

The Makers are in Donegal, and im wondering if I should contact them to authenticate the item... however it has a very distinguished label.

Its in fantastic condition, however it has aquired a few moth pin holes in the lining.
I have googled, blogged, even searched ebay and etsy!!
I am baffeled :o

Can anyone point me in the right direction??

TIA xx

As above. Can't really help if we don't know wha it is!

If you're thinking of selling it on Ebay, you'll need some sort of proof it's not a fake, otherwise you could end up in trouble!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Surely an auction house would be a better place for a valuable antique ?

    Sorry,
Its a coat (believe it or not)
Its a Donegal Tweed, Magee, over coat, its 3/4 length.
It is a genuine one. I am waiting on my father bringing it over, so I can have a look at the tweed and compare it to the archives!

It's only 'worth' what someone will pay for it, put on at a tenner.

Would it perhaps help to take it to a vintage clothing store to see if they could give you a valuation? And suggestions of the best places in which to sell it. I think you'd lose out on ebay

I think I will take some photographs, and sent them to some vintage sites! Maybe the American Market would be the place to sell it!! :money:

  • I live near Donegal, hehe :)

I've seen these in charity shops (though rarely) and I'm afraid that its only worth what someone will pay, I reckon you could sell it on a vintage clothing site such as etsy.com - for the £100-£150 range. You could expect to be waiting from a couple of months to a couple of years for it to sell though, so unpredictable!

Unfortunately I don't think the prices being asked on ebay equate to selling prices at all.

If you search for Donegal tweed - Magee some of the prices are very low, a standard jacket will sell for as little as £10 - £20 (I can't see any longer cats sold recently) and if you remember that some of the price will include postage as ebay postage credit is usually not high enough to cover costs of a heavy jacket, then the price after fees is quite poor.

Mind you I sold a lovely vintage Harris Tweed jacket last year in immaculate condition for £30 which I was very pleased with as I ended up with about £20 after fees and postage and it was just something i had in storage from my late father.

But, of course, what items actually sell for as opposed to giving a selling price are two different things. I can't see any reason why it would reach more than £50 (ish) to be honest.

If he wants to sell it then put it on ebay as BIN for £75 and accept offers as necessary. It would only cost you 40p to do that.
Otherwise take your chance at 99p and see what it goes up to or wait for free listing weekends.

Etsy is a good idea, if you're willing to wait for a year or two with no guarantee of it being sold at a £100.

Re the moth holes. I don't think moths would eat a silky lining and would only attack wool and cashmere. Have a very close look.
