Please help - overnight storage heaters wont work?

Hey all - I'm really hoping someone can point me in the right direction as I'm cold outside and cold inside my home! brrrr

I am in a 1 bed rented flat, with economy 7. I have two overnight storage heaters, one in the living room and one in the bedroom (I keep the bathroom door closed meaning that never gets any heat so as cold as the freezer). The have newlec nlsh12mn and newlec economy 7 written on them. Dials but no timers that I can see. I put the dial for it to heat to the highest overnight and leave the output on 1. It's like this all night and most of the day until I come home and then turn the output dial up. But by then there is no heat, it seems to have run out during the day when I'm at work? Am I doing something wrong?

I also have an economy 7 hot water and I only ever manage to get a very quick shower out of the hot water in the day. Not enough for washing up and a shower. And I haven't had a shower yet when I haven't had to hurry at the end because the water starts running cold. For the hot water I just turn a dial to the time and there is a line marked 'summer' and 'winter'.

I have sash windows that aren't doubled glazed but have secondary glazing (not sure what this is). I'm thinking of getting that cling film stuff to put up but I'm worried about the sticky tape stuff ripping my paint or window frames and end up paying for that as I'm in a rented place. But I'm beginning to think that I might risk it if this is why my flat is always cold.

I'm worried about buying a plug in heater as presumably it will be expensive for my bills?

I also just received my bill for the last quarter from EDF (from September to now) and it's £168! This is more than I used to have when living in a 2 bed flat, for 3 of us! I'm thinking if I'm not getting any actual heat from the storage heaters I might as well turn them off instead of paying all this money?

I have had a search on the web and round these forums and have seen people's general reviews about storage heaters but I'm feeling I must be doing something wrong.

Please help me!

Hard to advise without seeing the kit, but you seem to be operating it right.

Is there a hot water storage tank somewhere? How big is it?No way should you only get that much hot water out.

    I suggest:

    1) find the make/model of the heaters, then use google. You'll find the instruction manual online somewhere. Then check you are operating them right.

    2) check the Consumer Unit (fuse box). It could be something as simple as the circuit being switched off!

    3) aske the landlord to either come round and demonstrate how it all works, or provide instructions (or his agent).

    4) it is of course possible, the heaters are too small/inadequate to hold the heat all day - not much you can do....Have you checked them in the morning? Lunchtime? Do they give out any heat at these times?

    5) finally, WRITE (yes, a letter) to the landlord, at the address provided on your tenancy agreement "for the serving of notices", advising him the heating /hot water supply is faulty and asking him to fix it.
