Snowpocalypse now

Although we have very little snow here just now we had plenty at the start of the week.
Watching the chaos on tv has given me a bit of a laugh. It seems that most people have no idea how to drive in these conditions but it is easy. Most important thing is have the right tyres.
I drive a Jag XJR and have 2 sets of wheels - 1 for the summer (when the temp is above 8 deg C, an 1 set with winter M & S rated tyres.
So far I have only once had the ABS kick in and that was when I got a little heavy on the loud pedal.0 -
For most folk who actually need to read what I put in the OP, it's a bit late to get winter tyres, even if you can find some they will be silly prices.
We have a set for both of our cars. The only car that doesn't get them is the company Mondeo which I'm fine with as it just means I can't be sent out to site.
It is amusing watching people's reactions as they get overtaken by a woman in a loud RWD car in the unploughed lane. They pull out, try to follow for a bit and give up after 10-60 seconds. It's not because I'm a particularly great driver, only really got a few winter's worth of experience on snow. It's purely down to the tyres.0 -
I followed some old dear today whose front screen had been cleared by the wipers only and the front side windows had been cleaned by lowering them half way.
Side rear windows and read window were still under 5 inches of the white stuff we had here.
i keep a squeegy thing in the car as after I'd nipped shopping the car was covered in snow again. So I used the su=queegyu to clear all the windows.
and the shopping I did was for general stuff we'd run out of, not emergency stock food lol.0 -
Milk and bread! OMG! Milk and bread!
I am genuinely out of bread (ok for milk though) the local Tesco was apparently stripped bare of both last night, so I just bought some today after they'd resupplied.0 -
snows really deep here about 7-8 inches (living ontop of a mountain) and it hasnt stopped snowing as of yet.
cant move my car at all for love no money as we have a brick paved parking space thats slighlty facing uphill and all it does is spin when pulling off in 2nd or 3rd gear at low revs and i have a set of pirelli winters on the front.
so the car sits where it is and me tucked up in the warm.
PS get some liquid de-icer and put in the boot, when car is stuck instead of digging it out pour it on tyres and about 2 feet infront of them and melt the snow, get someone to stay put whilst you get going and kick some snow back over it to stop the cats and doggies eating it.0 -
My 2d worth:
- Why not clear the junk out of your garage and park the car in there! It keeps the snow off the car and it starts easier
Okeydokey.
I can reverse the car into the garage but I can't open the doors to get out. Not enough room to climb out of the windows and no sunroof.
Fact is most cars are too big for 1960's spec garages. The man without a signature.0 -

The comment was aimed at those who keep £20 worth of junk in the garage and park £20,000 worth of car in the drive.
I agree that old garages were definitely not made for modern 2-door cars. My 4 door Cmax just fits our garage and I struggle to get in and out. Diet time methinks

Just got home after visiting elderly relative to make sure they were ok as they are a bit deaf and cannot hear you on the phone.
2 steep hills and Chelsea tractors skidding everywhere, my old Yaris Verso with Ultragrip 8s never spun a wheel !0 -
Lots to learn here. The Yaris doesnt have enough power to spin its wheels, Even in the snow

2WD or 4WD they all slide off the road when going too fast. but with a 4WD you have a better chance of getting back onto the road.
As long as its still on its wheels of course.
Sitting in front of the TV with the heating on 25 degrees and watching the nutters on the news. Sitting in 2 hours of traffic to pop down to the shop to get a newspaper.
Sister drove into Birmingham centre today. 20 minutes to get from the Pershore road island to the Bristol road lights.
You can walk it in about 2 minutes.
She said the lights turned red and the cars just kept going through, Even though the exit was blocked.
