Need to by extension phone lead for Router.. RJ11? RJ12? RJ45

Hi all

We have a Sky Broadband Router (D-Link) working perfectly well. However, we want to move it to the other side of the room (away from the phone socket). Therefore we need to buy a extended cable. At present, the 3 cables in the back of the router are labeled:
Power, Ethernet & ADSL. I know what the Ethernet is. Power is no prob. It's just the other cable I need to buy. Is this cable an RJ11 or RJ12 which looks very similar?
Thanks all

  • I should've added that one end of the present wire plugs into the back of the Router and the other end plugs into the small White Microfilter. Well, at least I think the Small White box is a Micro filter!!! It plugs into the phone socket at one end and the other end it has 2 sockets. One says ADSL, the other is the socket our telephone is plugged into.
So it's obvious the lead I require is ADSL to ADSL but which one? Some of the Cables beginning RJ.... Look VERY similar.
    Thanks.

Running an ADSL router on a plug in extension will introduce noise pickup on the ringwire and may reduce your speed. If possible you should avoid doing it.

You would be better off leaving the router by the phone point and extending the Ethernet.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I understood the theory give or take but following a long chat with a very bright 'bright sparks' engineer, based on his real world experiences and a bit of a demo this week , I'm even more convinced. If at all possible, plug your router into the master socket, preferably a combined filtered face plate. Minimise any additional ancillary equipment / extensions / DIY wiring etc. Extend your ethernet via cat 5 / powerline plugs as required.
ADSL is very sensitive to imperfect or extended wiring. Ethernet is much more robust.

TBH extension leads are probably better quality than the cable used to run a telephone line around the inside of a house. The ringwire problem is easily solved by disconnecting it at the master socket. Modern phones make no use of the ringwires so that will not be a problem.

Corrected for you. In comparison to the cable used externally to the house and its length, internal cable is gold standard.

    thanks for the correction but.....

extending the wiring usually introduces imperfections. The line to your house is what it is, but it is possible to make it significantly worse by adding additional connections beyond the master socket.

If it is extended CORRECTLY then it will not introduce any more loss than is inherent in the cable. The problem comes on poor installation of extensions e.g using a screwdriver to connect a cable into the master/slave sockets instead of a proper Krone tool (not the plastic !!!! that they put in extension kits)

!!!!!!. If you are saying that putting an RJ11 extension in line with your router will never degrade ADSL performance, I'll just have to agree to differ.
