Confused about PIP guidelines on mobility

Hi All

I am a little confused about the guidelines with the new PIP.

a. Can stand and then move more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided. 0 points
b. Can stand and then move more than 50 metres but no more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided. 4 points
c. Can stand and then move unaided more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 8 points
d. Can stand and then move using an aid or appliance more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 10 points
e. Can stand and then move more than 1 metre but no more than 20 metres, either aided or unaided. 12 points
f. Cannot, either aided or unaided, – 12 points

What does it mean by 'can move no more than 50 metres'??

Is that before pain kicks in, you fall over and have to crawl the rest of the way, or before you disapear in a cloud of smoke?

Hope someone can clear this up for me.

Cheers

The descriptors are in descending order of ability.
[qoute]c. Can stand and then move unaided more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 8 points
If, without any aids, you can stand, and walk a distance of over 20 meters, but not more than 50 meters, you get 8 points.
Without any aids means without sticks, or other tools, and without help from anyone else.

    So, 201 meters 0 points.
    199 meters 4 points
    51 meters 4 points
49 meters 8 points. (10 points if you need an aid to do this)

    Are wheelchairs classed as aids?

They're classed as an appliance, but as far as I am aware the test is of your ability to walk, not to use a wheelchair, manual or otherwise.

What about if its only sometimes you find it difficult to walk?
just passing through.... Nothing to see....
  • I can barely walk 20 metres before I need to hold on to something or sit down as the pain in unbearable, but once the pain goes, I can walk another 20 metres.

Thats what my question is, in theory, I can walk 40 metres but need to stop for a bit before 20 metres, so does that mean I can or can't walk 20 metres?

To me it looks very much like they are doing away with the pain part of the process altogether.

Nowhere do I see severe pain mentioned in relation to walking.

Some of us are in excruciating pain before we start walking, thats before taking into account the instability in knees/hips/ankles etc etc.

I can force myself to walk more than 50m if I have to, i.e. walking from car to lift and from lift to desk at work, but as for how far I can walk before being in significant and unremitting pain, the answer is 0 meters.
To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

All of the PIP descriptors should take the following into consideration

    • the individual must be able to reliably complete the activity as described in the descriptor. ‘Reliably’ means whether they can do so:
•Safely – in a fashion that is unlikely to cause harm to themselves or to another person.
•To a necessary and appropriate standard – given the nature of the activity.
•Repeatedly – as often as is reasonably required.
•In a timely manner – in a reasonable time period.

So you need 12 points to get the enhanced rate of PIP? Is the above question the ONLY questions on which one gets points towards the mobility component?

The descriptors have yet to be debated in Parliament so with a massive amount of luck they may be made less vicious although I'm sure McVey will try her best to keep them as vicious as she can. There is also going to be a review of PIP before the full DLA to PIP reprocessing begins to take place so again hopefully the review will highlight how draconian and punitive these last minute changes to the descriptors have been.

This was the case with the ESA mobilising descriptor when the WRAG 15 point distance was 50m whereas the Support Group distance was 30m but after a review the SG distance was brought into line with the WRAG distance.

Many people have intimitant mobility difficulties, should everyone get HRM then?

No one should get IMVHO HRM of DLA if they cannot prove beyoned doubt that they have severe mobility difficulties at all times or the criteria is a joke.

The criteria is a joke atm btw or they wouldnt be changing the goal posts, if someone can walk around a hypermarket etc. they do not deserve HRM of DLA or the PIP equivalent.
