  • Also suggest you contact your supplier as a pensioner living alone you may be eligible social tariff and energy saving measures

There is also a scheme called warm front to help pay for the costs of upgrading your heating.

There is a lot of information about this on the direct.gov (government) website.

And please please dont risk your health by sleeping in too cold a bedroom anymore.

  • I've read the other thread --very helpful, thank you ~ snip~

Your immersion not being an E7 PartL specification cylinder running from the 20a night tariff, means :

    - the alternative day rate water heating is costing you at least twice the price
    - the capability of the cylinder to store with minimal loss for 18 hours inadequate to non existent
    - one solution is a correctly sized PartL cylinder running from the E7 circuit

    - the "not a normal electric point" in your bedroom will almost certainly be a 20a E7 ready outlet for a night store heater
    - ditto the "other unused one in my living room, and another at the bottom of the stairs"

You can go either way, sort out stored heat & water and an E7 tariff costing about £1.5k ~ or ~ rip out your existing and replace with a GCH system. Either way, in addition, you will need an electrician to sort out your current wiring / distribution / metering.

    NOTES :

    - it doesn't cost "£4.46 per kW hour", .. .. nearer 4.46p per kW hour
    - if its on for for "15 and a half hours a day" you are on an E10 or Heatwise equivalent tariff
    - you will have little or no chance of switching suppliers other than SP on an E10 or Heatwise equivalent tariff
    - repairing your night store system or installing gas will both deliver a bedroom warmer than 7°C

The BBC report is cobblers, sleeping in a bed @ 7°C is dangerous not a warm bed in a 7°C bedroom. Unless you (1) have a serious heart condition and breathing in cold air causes [pulmonary mechanics] spasms in the lung and airways, making it harder to breathe, or (2) sleepwalk in a 7°C bedroom for an hour or more per night I see nothing other than alarming nonsense in that statement - take advice from your GP - I don't know your general or your pulmonary health status.

Essentially you have two choices go gas at £5k+ or change your pointless and uber expensive E10 to E7 and fix your night store problems @ £2k+

    - 13 # posts, search for the word throw returns no results
    - so which comment on here was "throwing money away" ?
    - I'm confused 'jb66' who said central heating did not add to the value of the dwelling ?

I ve never had any central heating in my life, a recent health statement was that central heating made people more obese. UK is the worst in Europe for obesity levels. Because the body was nt working to keep warm it s using far less calories. I find 15 degrees fine. 21 degrees is far too warm. I am 10 stones in weight, 6 ft, 32 inch waist, exactly the same weight as I was in my 20 s, and am now in my 60 s, so if you want to lose weight , switch your central heating off and freeze

Given your position wouldn't you start thinking, should i look at downsizing to something that's easier to maintain.

Storage heating in bedrooms are pointless. You would want heat late in the evening and overnight.
The old one on my landing is hot all through the night.

it doesn't cost "£4.46 per kW hour", .. .. nearer 4.46p per kW hour
    Sorry--that was a typo. I meant 4.46 pence

change your pointless and uber expensive E10 to E7
Oh dear, I don't understand this. Why is E10 pointless and uber expensive?

If I changed to E7 I wouldn't get the daytime boost to the storage heater at the cheap rate. (I don't think I'm on an E10 and I don't think I'm on Heatwise either as I don't think my supplier offers Heatwise.- and there's nothing on the bill to tell me what I am on. perhaps I should ring them and ask.)

    @ £2k+
Thank you. I'll look into the £2k option
  • Its not just people with heart conditions or who sleepwalk that need warm bedrooms over 7 degrees c ! And to call a report based on medical advice cobblers is based on exactly what medical qualifications that you hold ..and what assessment you have made of the OP ?

Suggest OP speaks to her doctor about HER medical history /health and checks out if she is eligible for help with her heating costs.

I think it can be dangerous territory saying that medical empirical data is "cobblers" without any evidence to back up what you are saying.

Check out warm front they may be able to help with the cost and it may not be the cheaper one they go for in your situation.

Also the OP may not want to downsize ..that is her choice.

Look in your first post in #1 you said you get a 'daytime boost' you also say in this # number you get a 'daytime boost'. If you get a daytime boost .. at all .. ever .. you are on E10, believe me regardless of what you believe you are on E10, and no .. .. you will not get the day / evening-time boost on E7. E10 [unsurprisingly] simply delivers 3 hours more at cheap rate [3+7=10] than E7.

That extra 3 hours electricity you get on E10 makes the whole of the tariff much more expensive pro-rata than E7. E10 is the luxury and more expensive version of E7. You are not presently making even half decent use of your night time cheap electricity regardless of what tariff you are on. You really need more heating, and more of that heat delivered to you at cheap rate and efficiently stored until you need it. That's what you appear to fail to understand - you need more quantity of storage and a PartL water system to keep that cheap stored heat & water hot until you need it.

Night storage heating is like a bank account. You either have sufficient storage to get enough cheap stuff into the bank the night before, or you pay double the price for the day rate. If you are at 7°C you have insufficient E10 stored heat to release over the 14 hours.

    ___________

    - 90% of your problems are poor insulation and poor use of E10 leading to insufficient stored heat
    - I assume in addition to poor insulation, dampness and mould you have no double glazing !
    - "not to have cavity wall because of condensation problem", more bad advice - get it done
    - leave the landing storage alone, get a panel heater, run it from the 13a socket in the bedroom
    - learn how to use night storage heat and night stored hot water effectively
    - the alternative day rate water heating is costing you at least twice the price
    - the capability of the cylinder to store with minimal loss for 18 hours inadequate to non existent
    - one solution is a correctly sized PartL cylinder running from the E7 circuit
