HSBC £12 to cancel a cheque

I sent a cheque to the MOD to get a war record and the only way is to send a cheque with the application and hey ho it's got lost! They suggested that I sent another with another £30 cheque and to cancel the first one.
I rang HSBC who told me it's £12 to cancel a cheque which is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!
Now thinking of changing banks as think thats crazy. This is more of a rant than anything else but needed to vent.
Thanks grrrrrrr.

Have you checked the terms and conditions booklet for your account? I bank with NatWest and they currently charge £10 for stopping a cheque but with the proviso "unless it has been lost or stolen", which would presumably be the case here.0

Why do you think it is crazy?
I have worked in a bank and know the manual work and liability that exists when dealing with stopped cheques and I always wondered why it was so cheap when you consider the work needed and the risks compared to other things that are charged.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

You have an advantage that most dont, you know how it works, if I maybe understood the work that went into it then I wouldnt be so niggled by the charge and would be willing to pay the fee no problem. From the person I spoke to it was as if they just press a button and hey presto that will be £12 please if you get what I mean. But like I said before I was just venting at the time with frustration.
I appreciate everyones relplies they have been great. Thank you.
I'm much calmer now and will wait it out for a few weeks and see what surfaces if the cheque turns up before I ring the bank but I would of thought it would of turned up by now it's been a month. Why you can pay by card for the MOD records would be so much easier.0 -

My advantage is dated. It was a long time ago. However, it did have a partial automated system in place. Effectively, a filter was added to the account for the amount and cheque number. That was the pressing of buttons bit. Every time for 12 months, if a cheque went through the account, it would appear on a report. If there was a close match then the cheque had to be pulled from the batches and viewed to make sure it wasnt the cheque in question. That was the manual bit. If there was a match, then it would take about an hours work to bounce it. If the cheque was missed by the bank (which did happen from time to time then the bank suffered the loss - that was liability bit).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Oh that all makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Hopefully the cheque will just turn up and get cleared then we can finally know my Grandads war records!0 -
Why don't you cancel the lost or stolen chgeque as advised and issue a new cheque?0
