Then you have 99% of the time no idea who the job is with if it just says 'large company in the city' - that gives nothing away.

I would try and get around this and often with success. I would ask questions like asking for the company postcode as I might be dependent on public transport. If free car parking is available which could mean the employer was located on an industrial estate and not Town centre based. Also I might ask what is the nature of the employers business as I wouldn't want to work in a particular type of environment. I would also google as much as I could from their job description to see if it might appear on a company website or the description of the job might have lead meet to the direct employer who was recruiting.

Why would an agency who dont want to put you forward for the job tell you the postcode?

Google the job advert? You think I don't do that?

Most agencies in accounts work will not tell you who they are let alone where they are till you have an interview so if you are not going to be considered they will tell you zero!

Sorry, I didn't understand your comment. Of course if they are not going to put you forward for the job they aren't going to reveal anything to you who the employer is. My comment was based on if they wanted you to be put forward for the role of course.

If the agency doesn't tell you the employer or you don't have enough nous as to who they are recruiting for, then you have to take the decision in deciding if you want to be put forward by them for the role.

I was told by an agency that I was unsuitable for vacancies in my field as I was "overexperienced" ??? Fortunately last time I was looking for a move the MD of the company I work for now called me to ask if I was interested in working for him. Some recruitment people couldn't get a job for themselves never mind anyone else...

You can not decide if you want to be put forward or not as the agency is the only one who can out you forward and they are not in my case so therefore if I cant work out who the company is by a basic advert you have no alternative but to leave it.

  • If you want to get the skinny on recruitment agencies what I've find is that Google is your friend. Usually I find that the recruitment agents tend to have some unique and silly name (Sky O'Connor, Diamond Jones) that means you can easily find their LinkedIn page. From their you can have a good look at the person you have been trying to help you to get a job.

Usually it turns out that they studied some pointless subject at an ex-polytechnic uni before venturing off into the world of sales until they eventually end up in recruitment. Have a good look and you'll realise why these people are so hate filled.

Rather unprofessional and patronising for them to have sent that email. I see they have found the time to concentrate on that rather than sifting through all the CVs and applications that they are now asking you not to send.

Isn't it the job of the agency to ensure that they know what each of their clients is looking for, has experience in and is qualified to do or in their opinion, shows a potential aptitude for? I

My experience of agencies has been okay, I've been lucky in that I've found employment quickly when I've been looking for it. But I am under no illusions that they are working for the employer and not the employee. When you are at interview stage they really couldn't be nicer. When you get the job it's all phone calls to see how you are going on etc.

When you are looking for a change or it hasn't worked out, they no longer show any interest - their priority is finding candidates for jobs, not finding jobs for candidates.

I know lots of people are chasing lots of jobs but what I've always done in the past is research the companies I would like to work for and try to find out which agencies they use. Companies will only use one or two and also find out how long an agency has been running in your area. If they've been around donkey's years then they have a proven track record. When you join an agency as your own questions - ask whoever is dealing with you how long they've been there, have they always worked in recruitment, have they worked at any other agencies in the area etc.

Good luck with your job hunting, I would give these lot the swerve though, personally.
