Good post Katie, I am sure you won't lose any sleep being blacklisted by what seems a typical back street tin pot agency.

My experience of dealing with recruitment agencies is nothing but bad and what you have quoted sums up their arrogance as apparently it's all the candidates fault.

Many recruitment agents lie to you through their teeth and feed you with non stop BS, particularly over their non existent job vacancies that they appear to want to fill.

One piece of advice I would give anyone who registers with an agency is NEVER EVER EVER inform them of current job interviews that you have pending. They are not asking this as they are interested in you but because they will want to put up their candidates against you. As soon as you've gone, they will be on the phone contacting that employer and so reducing your chances of getting you the role.

Some of the recruitment consultants I have found are rude arrogant and so full of themselves, they would probably sell their own grandmother if it got them a sale:eek:

I'd of just sent back "oh do !!!! off"

    These are fairly standard occurances...

If you contact an agency and get no information about a job, the job does not exsist, or could of already been taken.

Getting called into the office, for interveiws, tests or whatever usually means you have contacted an office junior thats been set to that task.
  • I worked for a recruitment consultancy for a number of years, and on many occasions have justified their practises on here. That just seems ridiculous though! The e-mail is really patronising in my view, and its whole tone takes away a couple of valid points they are making within it. I wouldn't lose much sleep over your reply - there are plenty of agencies and if you are prepared for them not to work for you it is no loss. You never know as well your reply may even capture more interest, get someone to call you to discuss, and lead to a job!

    Good luck

    Hi Katie,

Thanks for taking time firstly to read our email and secondly to respond to it. Please, don’t think that that email was meant to attack work seekers. My aim was to try to help people understand one of the reasons why they may be getting rejections. People looking for work are the life blood of our company and we really do appreciate that. And yes, it’s our job to go through the applications. What I was trying to get across albeit not very eloquently, was give yourself the best possible chance.

I do understand your frustrations having been in that position myself. How can we take this forward? How can we make our service better for you? This is not a fatuous comment, I mean it. We do try to inform everyone of their outcome, although I’ll admit that it is a generic email in the main. No, we don’t make enough phone calls – for whatever reason on the day.

Would you be happy to write an open letter saying what you want from an agency? I’m happy to publish it on our blog as a guest blogger. We need to improve our industry and we can’t do it without honest feedback.

    Kind regards,

    XXXXXXX.

  • Alot of agencies use your CV and call all your previous positions listed and use it as a 'lead' for their sales targets!

Alot of the time, you have to chase up the agency for a response to an interview.

I had an agency say they found a position for me and I had to register. I luckily found a new job. I advised the agency and the consultant asked the following..

What is the name of the company?

    What is the salary?

I wondered what it has to do with her, alot of the agencies dont even tell YOU the name of the company they are applying for because they do not want you to go directly to them so that they lose out on the commission fee!

One main reason why people get rejected is agencies do not read the CV or are not willing to represent the unemployed.

I think agencies should give good candidates the same treatment that is fair.

I wondered what it has to do with her, alot of the agencies dont even tell YOU the name of the company they are applying for because they do not want you to go directly to them so that they lose out on the commission fee!

Used to get these cold calls from agencies all the time. One in particular a leading High street name that starts with a B and ends in the word Street.

Would go along the lines. "Hi there, we have seen your CV on line and think that we have some vacancies that might suit you but you have to come in and register". Meantime they would ask about your CV and would only be interested in the companies that you had recently worked for, salaries, and oh Yes names of Managers and HR contacts. Don't need to be an Einstein as to why they were particularly seeking this information.

Meantime 24 hours later, you would go and register and surprise, surprise, the job has already gone .

They then of course have got you by the B***s and would phone me weekly and all they was interested in was companies you have recently applied for jobs and any interviews lined up which would have been used for their marketing and sales leads . As already mentioned in an earlier post, what ever you do don't tell them this?

So avoid agencies like the plague and try and do your own sourcing for a job if you can. Try and beat them at their own game and find out who they are recruiting for. The jobs they recruit for tend to be on company websites and available for all to find.

Sometimes true, sometimes not. Probably only abour 1% of the time :)

The other week I saw a good job advertised with an agency and it was obvious it was for the Discovery Channel and I applied via the agency but also looked on the Discovery site where the job was not advertised at all and you could only apply via their site to jobs that were advertised, not anything on spec :(

Then you have 99% of the time no idea who the job is with if it just says 'large company in the city' - that gives nothing away.
