Orange also do a call bolt on. £1 buys you 25 minutes. = 4p a minute

If you both had suitable smart phones you could use www.viber.com and call each other for free.

Searching through our drawers of old stuff (sometimes it's good to be a bit of a hoarder!) I have found:
    1. An old orange SIM - have no idea of the number though!
    2. An old mobile which is unlocked and has bluetooth!

So I'm good to go. I just have to somehow activate the SIM and find out it's number and then add credit to it! Hurrah!
Any ideas about how to do that? Can I just activate it as normal or will it be dead if it's not been used for ages?

It will probably be dead. You can get a new one for free with a bonus £5 of credit from Orange when you top up your frst £10.... http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/freesim
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I ordered one already - I was just feeling impatient and wanted to sort it now!

You could consider making calls using Viber (uses data like Skype to make calls), but much more seamless. If you install Viber on your phone, when you call you just decide whether to call via Viber or via regular calls.

The sound quality of Viber is supposed to be better than Skype, but not used it much cos I have the free minutes with Ovivo.

Assuming that your handset is unlocked, you could just swap the SIM over to the PAYG one when you've used your contract minutes up, but a bit of a faff.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    That wouldn't work.

    1) it's not unlocked
    2) I'd miss all the other calls coming through to my number.

Bit of a faff but I'm going to have 2 mobiles. We found n old one in a drawer that is both unlocked and bluetooth, I have a free SIM from Orange on the way and I won't even need to put much credit on it as the friend who I spent all my money calling will put me as his Magic Number and call me for free! Hurrah!

Beat me to it! Viber is a definite possibility here. Not always amazing SQ but certainly usable. Better than paying over the odds for calls imo.

Just got a VM Big Talk PAYG sim, it activated within minutes,
  • Have you thought of internet alternatives. All (most) smartphones have a Skype or Viber app available in their respective app stores. Skype requires no minutes, does not come off your minutes and can be accessed through WiFi. Plus you get free video calls to any other Skype users with a data connection. As well as this unlimited SMS are an easy alternative.
