I hope the OP has ensured that her kids do look apologetic, and say "thank you" for asking for their balls back.
Our one neighbour's son is quite frankly an ASBO waiting to happen. He sneers around the place (he's about 13 now but has been a pain for the last 6 years or so) and like an earlier poster's experiences, he used to more or less demand the ball back by shouting over the fence. He has never said thank you, even when I half-climbed a tall leylandi tree (growing on their side but overhanging ours) and spent some time poking the blasted ball through with a garden cane.
They had a set of goalposts right up against our side, when the uphill garden would have made it much more sensible to have it on the other side where the adjacent fence was about 20 feet high! Of course we couldn't say anything to the parents as we do have to live next door, and I can't be doing with feuds.
On the last occasion I suggested they play on the green which is right outside the front - on a quiet cul-de-sac road too. Thankfully they (lad + mates) seem to have taken the hint at last. It used to drive me mad when I was in the middle of cooking something and I'd have to wash hands, fetch ball, throw back, wash hands and continue. And all for not a flicker of thanks  .
There is a younger lad on our other side, and he asked very apologetically and respectfully for a ball (sponge, not whacking great plastic thing) back the other day. It was a pleasure to fetch it for him, and he thanked me effusively.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe
