Chorizo, chocolate with hazelnuts, bottled water, olive oil, kitchen roll, juices and the quilted loo roll good value.

It is true that not all lidl stores are alike. We are equidistant between about three stores and the one I tried first was frankly crap - never had any fruit or veg and was always missing certain types of produce. It was kind of out on its own a bit. Then I started going to one very close to a large asda and in a very busy area and obviously due to higher turnover of goods, it was always well stocked. It is worth checking around to see if some are better....

I love Lidl, but I couldn't do a full shop or buy my meat there. The fruit & veg is often disappointing but cooked meats, cheeses & yogurts are very good. I also buy a few other things - herb mayonnaise (green squeezy bottle), chocolate, biscuits, big jars of 'cornichons', cheapy instant noodles, ice cream, wine, olive oil. Some of the non-food stuff - detergents etc. are also very good. I think you need to try stuff, decide what you like, and nip in occasionally.

The bars of choclate from aldi and lidl are nice, cheaper than cadburys, the paster from lidl is good, the peppered german salami is nice from aldi, the fruit juice from either is good too, i like the bar of white chocolate i think it is with smarties in it, the lidl in swindon isnt the best imo but the aldi is good

I certainly couldn't do a whole weeks' shop at Lidl, I pop in there once a month and always get the same stuff:
Smoked Salmon (cheaper than everywhere else AFAIK & lovely!)
    Frozen Salmon steaks
Their version of Weetabix (Bixies? can't stand Weetabix myself but OH & DS say Lidl's are just as good as the real thing)
Mozzarella (same price as Asda but much tastier)
Frozen Indian Snacks (Veg Samosas & Onion Bhajis - taste gorgeous and great to have as nibbles or a starter if we're having curry)
Washing up liquid (not as good as Fairy, but much cheaper and better then Asda own brand)

Never liked the look of their fruit & veg, bought some frozen burgers and sausages from there once for a BBQ. Never again, they were not good! Also have tried their sirloin steak - it was very gristly! Only buy steak from my local butcher now. Pricey but always fabulous.

I shop usually at Asda (it's at the end of my road, and as I don't drive its daft not to really!) but pick up a few bits at M&S or Tescos if I go down town.

I'm not terribly enticed by their fresh produce, especially if the store isn't a ery high turnover one.

We only have an Aldi here and the best thing i've bought are packs of summer flowering bulbs for £1 each. Currently seeing a 80-90% growth success, although still waiting to see how good the flowers will be.

Generally i find the dried stuff and pasta sauces are alright and cheaper than non-value supermarket stuff, and the washing and laundry consumables look quite good value. Still, if you dont use as much as the recommended dosage when washing, you can hold out for when detergents get reduced due to damage, discontinuing or special deals.

I only ever go into Lidl if they have anything in their special offer magazine that I fancy. A couple of weeks ago I went in for gardening stuff and picked up a smashing sewing machine, it must have been on a previous special and they had some left so reduced the price from £50 to £40. Also every time I'm in I stock up on their bars of coffee chocolate!

The Serrano ham and salamis are good - anything that's meant to be a continental meat. Olive oil is good and like someone else said, my dh likes the bottled water for work. We also like their taco shells. However |I tend to call in if there's something in the non food line I want - golf shoes for ds1 @£8, a table vice for dh and a hot smoker thing for chicken and fish for me, for example, and then pick up food.

the place I did find tatty and with nothing I would buy was Netto's in canterbury (never been to another so maybe a one off) which was dark and dirty and could only be reached by going down an alley that was used as an unofficial toilet overnight !!

Netto in Canterbury is grotty but you can get in via the carpark entrance - walk around to the right of the cinema and up left on dover street. mind you Netto is still rubbish. Prefer Asda..
